This is a very nuanced discussion, and I don't believe it can be simplified. But the framers of our nation's systems could hardly have anticipated the tools of modern media to amplify and distort. As a writer, I'm aware that words create worlds. The fundamental principles of democracy give us freedom of speech as the highest good. On the other hand "Post modern" philosophy informs us that our individual backgrounds and experiences will result in infinite facets of valid perspectives. But we might reach into the history of rhetoric and wise governance to assign merit to those more trained and skillful in both. Unfortunately, the responsibilities of good journalism have also been corrupted. This has brought us to a situation where carnival barkers hold positions of power despite a complete lack of qualification. Harris and Walz's opponents have absolutely no education or experience in the most simple principles of civics. Instead they are schooled in elements of corruption and manipulation, abetted by embedded media channels. Seemingly, a perfect recipe for the fall of a civilization. This could be an open discussion for our highest intellects, and as serious as any climate change.

You are soooo right. The ultra wealthy and the extreme right wing coalesced and bought airtime and print to deceive the functionally illiterate whites into voting against their own best economic interests, destroying the Middle Class in America. Fox News and other media channels did the job. {Thomas Frank: "What's the Matter with Kansas?" 2004]
