I’ve said it before that there is a direct relationship between increased employment and decreased crime. But there is so much more. Jobs make home ownership a possibility and affordable housing further increases that possibility. The sense of pride that comes with having a good job is infectious. I’ve said it before that there is a direct relationship between increased employment and decreased crime. But there is so much more. Jobs make home ownership a possibility and affordable housing further increases that possibility. The sense of pride that comes with having a good job is infectious. Neighborhoods start to feel more vibrant and welcoming. I could go all night but mostly I want to say; thank you Joe, job well done!
And yet, President Biden and Vice President Harris need to address the broken systems that are catastrophically failing us. A contractor is working at our house after resigning from the U.S. Forest Service where he was an experienced professional, because paychecks were delayed and he was very underpaid.
Here’s a gifted WaPo article about that unfolding catastrophe. This kind of thing makes hardworking people cynical of big government and opens the door to shameless populism.
Our medical system is also melting down, losing staff while some struggle to keep up. Access to specialist care is delayed by months. This also holds true for first responders. EMT’s in our area start at less than $22/hour. We are one hospital short. Private equity is hollowing out hospitals and clinics. Police officers in WA state are underpaid and understaffed. Teachers and educators are underpaid and understaffed. Homeless people beg in supermarket parking lots with their children in tow because we don’t commit to provide services and minimal housing. Democrats need to speak loudly and in detail about what it takes to fund services that are pillars of a civilized country.
Trump is not the answer, but people relate to his American carnage description and the promise to forcibly take charge, and many are too exhausted in the struggle to stay afloat to question the right wing media juggernaut that reflects how they feel. Democrats’ touting of economic achievements is tone deaf without providing a clear vision of how to fix what’s still broken in the eyes of the working class. We need to reach those voters to shut down the MAGA movement. Kamala is making a start, but I think she is appropriately criticized for lack of more specifics that might capture more MSM coverage.
Kamala needs to call them out on it, just as she’s doing with abortion and reproductive healthcare. It needs an umbrella topic like restoring the services that have been gutted by Republicans. Reagan’s savvy communication staff promoted a message of the day to control the narrative.
“Last year, 35 percent of wildland firefighting jobs in California were vacant, according to ProPublica.”
“…we spent nights sleeping in apocalyptic fields of ash. We spent countless hours choking on smoke. Poison oak blistered our skin. The compensation for me, as an entry-level firefighter, was around $13.45 an hour… Of the 20 members of that crew, only five are left four years later.
Damn, it’s hard to get on the priority list of all the things that repubs have destroyed nor made worse. You could start with unions, but the list is long and the blame is limited to the last one in power.
Part (most?) of the blame in the health care industry is selling out to investment firms that are dollar oriented rather than patient care oriented. Covid burnout is another.
Private equity is not regulated to prevent their acquiring an essential company, putting it in debt, selling off profitable parts of the company, closing down parts that aren’t profitable, reducing head count until essential workers like nurses can barely keep up, burn out and quit. The private equity execs steal millions by destroying essential services and institutions, and we let them get away with it. This must stop, and if Harris is elected without a governing trifecta, she needs to use the bully pulpit to call out the corrupt actors who are lining their pockets and destroying our country.

All of this and I mean ALL of this is the policies of the republican/conservative/libertarian leaders. ALL OF IT.

Thanks for this article.

Absolutely criminal.
Wow!
Who benefits society more? Fire fighters or hedge fund managers? To which do "We the People" owe gratitude?

There’s more to do, to be sure.
Always.

That's a big deal. There was a long article in our newspaper about how that has eroded patient care. Not that anything has been done to stop it.
