I don't know when you were in school, but much later I learned that publishers sold different books in different parts of the country. Only white people in Southern schoolbooks (and I presume, although I do not know for sure, that those same books were used in segregated Black schools.)
We evidently got the same history of the Civil War and aftermath in Alabama.
