Reid, of course, at your age you do know how hard life can be. You, also, know how good it can be particularly if you live in the United States. Life is really good compared most places on earth. Sometime though we don't appreciate it. I know that I have to remind myself of the goodness of things in general.

This is a good place to be and filled with good people like yourself.

By the way did I mention I was 80? Hmmm, feels like I did at 79.

I believe this is a dangerous way to think because it makes us complacent. Yes, the U.S. is a fine place to live if, like me and I suspect like you, one is white, male, and middle class or above. For all others, it is a difficult place, with barriers at every turn to living a normal, peaceful life. We can't afford to believe this life is available to most people in this society; such beliefs serve to make us politically impotent.
