"Reaganomics" was and is all about letting the tail wag the dog. Can governments beneficially and responsibly make use of private contractors? Of course, so long as the public's interest comes first, and public inspection and control is not significantly compromised. It appears to me that a lot of "privatization" put's the public's interests last, protecting some private entities profits ahead of the public good. Some of it just seems like pawning public assets for an instant payoff, and then passing the ongoing and elevated costs to those yet unborn.

Even more alarming is the coercive powers of government that are necessary yet become the prime tools of despots when abused, such as prisons for profit. It is an insult to wisdom and justice to insert conflicts of interest that frankly incentivize injustice and corruption, and potentially worse, often result in barriers to public inspection and control. Blackwater compounded the atrocity which was our invasion of Iraq (yeah, Saddam was a despot, but that does not always stop us from letting them be, or selling them arms). Unchecked power tends to corrupt, as both Putin and Wagner illustrative.
