I am certain you're right, but I think the repeating pattern comes from something older than human history. Consider the following story I heard from Kim Polman of Reboot the Future:
The story of the imaginal cell is about the transformation of the caterpillar to the butterfly. The caterpillar gorges throughout its life until it reaches a tipping point and goes into its cocoon to protect itself from a world that is revolting against its greed. Shut off from the world, it begins to decay. In the chaos of decay, the imaginal cells, that were latent but there all along, begin to come alive. As they do, they are being attacked by the old way of doing things. The imaginal cells communicate with and find each other by emitting a common frequency. Eventually, the old way of doing things gives up and the butterfly emerges.
Ref: Being Human podcast, episode 84.
The common frequency I believe we are using to communicate with and find each other is the "treat others the way you would want to be treated if the shoe was on the other foot" principle. The "enemy" is not other people. Instead, the enemy is the only alternative to that moral principle, which is the immoral "do unto others before they do unto you" principle.
I think this is what’s called “the arc of history bending towards justice”…I hope…let’s keep up the good fight.
