Heather herself has laid out this history for us several times. My own political memory stretches as far back as Watergate, and the process was well underway by then. The party has been wooing conservative Christians for forty years, a project that is now bearing fruit: a base that idolizes an amoral brute who is fine with taking away rights from everyone else as long as he can lead these sheep, smiling up at him, into the abyss of his own misery. In the meantime, the party elite watch their bank accounts swell with blood money and the media give us 24-hour real-time coverage of the spectacle of collapsing empire.
This is the Republican Party today. They worked very hard to get here, while many of us were sleeping. Their bed and ours: getting out of it will require that we confront what they have been up to and why we were fine with it until very recently.
