There was no immediately pressing news today, so I got playing around for tonight’s letter and fell down a bit of a rabbit hole in a field that isn’t my usual turf.
Favorable SCOTUS 8/19/22 Ruling in Georgia Case: Richard Rose vs Brad Raffensberger. SCOTUS reinstated a lower GA Court ruling postponing an election for 2 of 5 seats on the GA Public Service Commission (PSC) on the basis that the " at-large " voting system dilutes black voters voting rights. Amy Howe at www.SCOTUSblog.com has been tracking this case. The underlying huge issue is the changing of state voting rules close in time to an election allegedly too late to enjoin as unconstitutional. That regressive tactic did NOT work this time. It's not over. Author's Email: howe.amy@gmail.com courtesy of Amy.
The PSC has been going from scandal to scandal since we moved here in '82. Some real doozies of all kinds. They give scandal lessons to other states, NO political or economic development is too petty for them to pass up....
First time I've seen this word, and it is so appropriate in today's political climate. Thank you for letting me add it to my lexicon!
From Wikipedia: "A kakistocracy is a government run by the worst, least qualified, or most unscrupulous citizens. The word was coined as early as the seventeenth century."
Google defines kakistocracy as “government by the least suitable or competent citizens of a state”. Think of tfg’s entire cabinet, not to mention the man himself.

Hi Christine. Thanks for your kind greeting! You must remember the Southern Company, speaking of outlaw power conglomerates that spanned several states. Thankfully broken up, but the little companies carry the tradition on. Even Duke Power, one of the most reputable at one time, long ago....
Hi Daria. Let's just say wounded in action but fighting on with what I have! Glad to be on anyone's mind--thanks for your kind words, and I hope all is well with you. Only on LFAA once in a while now, but I find all of you as brilliant as ever!
Hi, Gus! I'm mostly away from LFAA these days but always look for you and will continue to do so! Many wise folk on LFAA to be sure. All is well here, heading to Italy for a papermaking/bookbinding workshop in September; excited to be going out into the great, wide world. Take care, stay safe. Fondly, Daria
This was a glimmer of good news down here yesterday! The "good ol' boy network" that the PSC has been operating under for years and years might actually have to, oh you know, actually REPRESENT the people it supposedly serves. GA Power has had it good for far too long (Wanna read about their incompetence? For starters, Google "Plant Vogtle", the first nuclear power plant built in this country for 30 years, and now approaching a $30 billion price-tag...beyond ridiculous!) and things just might be changing. We can only hope...
How time flies. Boats and floats seemed to go in the water just a short time ago. The long days and early sunrises of summer are shorter. The nights are cooler. It's becoming real that winter storage is closing in. It's how a life comes and goes. But we always hope for another season. Let's do all we can for the next generation and not let this nation quit.
Boy! Your comments about DC summer weather brought back my memories of having to spend a couple of summer months, without air conditioning, to finish my master's thesis. My apartment was on a hill up from Catholic U. - where I attended the School of Library Science - right next to a stop sign that was part of a major bus route with frequent buses! Diesel buses. Amazing I don't have some sort of lung cancer between 1966 and today! Miserable barely describes it!
Andy, I lived in Gaithersburtg, MD, from 1983 to 1986 when I moved close to D.C. in Takoma Park. I totally agree with you about the weather. I still love D.C., though.
VIA Laurence Tribe on Twitter: Laurence Tribe (@tribelaw) tweeted at 0:19 PM on Fri, Aug 19, 2022:
“BIDEN has delivered the largest economic recovery plan since ROOSEVELT, the largest infrastructure plan since EISENHOWER, the most judges confirmed since KENNEDY, the second largest health care bill since JOHNSON, and the largest climate change bill in history.” Sweet Dreams HCR
😂No worries. This is just a concise way to send out via FB, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn and for letters to the editor of local papers. People on both Twitter and Instagram are always asking what President Biden has done. Many don't know because they are Trumpified. Short bites like this educated them.
YOU are excellent! I read Heather every day religiously but am burned out on reading so many opinion replies to posts. Am thrilled that there are more here. And many conversations happening here, but I've just started posting her letters everywhere with, hopefully, curiosity catching headlines to try to get more to read her.
I am cut and pasting on 10 fox programs right now. I can sometimes do 15 if my stomach can handle it. I just cannot hear their voices or read too much of their toxicity before it impacts my body mind. Here goes!!
I love this thread about sharing so I'm adding a project I created from Robert Hubbell's answer to the lies the GOP is spreading about Inflation Reduction Act, (specifically designed for use on Twitter). They are saying that IRA was going going to raise $20 billion in taxes from the middle class. This was reported by the NY Post allegedly based on a CBO analysis. I read the article but I couldn't understand what was incorrect until I asked for help in Robert's newsletter comments and he explained how they twisted what the CBO said in his next newsletter.
So each of these four tweets addresses a specific lie raised by GOP and includes a link to a source. They are 280 characters and the links work. The first one is the general one which used Robert's Tax and Spend quote and links to an earlier newsletter. The other three are introductions to the next newsletter answering the GOP lies. I hope this makes it a little easier to spread the word! I post these in answer to lying tweets.

IF the Lying Tweet mentions “Tax and Spend”
Republicans are calling the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) “tax and spend.” It’s true!
We’re TAXING multinational companies generating over $1 billion per year and SPENDING the money on seniors, US workers and the climate crisis. Pass it on!
Thank you!! It took several hours, including some delightful back and forth with Robert about the CBO article, so I'm really happy to hear it's helping.
BTW, when I was in Kindergarten, lo those many decades ago, there was another Terry in my class who made very "sloppy" drawings - and I often got his papers returned to me by mistake because I also spelled my name with a "y" instead of "i" like other girls (I think we may have had a Bobbi and a Tammi!) Thanks for the chance to tell that story again!
Oh, no. Blessings to YOU, Chaplain! I get so tongue-tied (text-tied?) after reading a lie, and left not knowing how to respond. This road map you created is fabulous! I will be sure to use it. Many thanks!
You are so welcome! I know what you mean about text-tied (I love it!) My version is that I have so much to say and not only is it not 280 characters, but it's way more than needed to make one point. So I have really enjoyed the discipline of creating these tweets (time goes by so fast when I'm working on them) , and I was hoping they would be useful to others. Thank you!!

I about fell off my chair laughing when he said 'I'm running out of show tunes' in this one! 😆 I have been subscribed to his YT channel for a number of years now and his rapier wit and musical talent always amaze me. I also was impressed with his personal story. He was recently interviewed on Mary Trump's show about his book, life experiences, and creative process. For anyone who is interested, the interview starts at around 2:40 - https://youtu.be/od6S3yOcmJ8
Hah, Ally. For me, it was the reverse. When Merrick first came unto the "scene," my first thought was "Wonder if he's related to Judy?"
I must be kissin' cousins with RR, because, also, when he chose the "Yesterday" song, it was that very song that I thought of when first all those parodies came out on Twitter surrounding tfg's outtakes.
I think his book is called, "Playing With Myself." He is just too funny and such a delight throughout the constant Constitutional crises and Covid. (The CCCC).
Thank you, Lynell and Natalie, for the links. I discovered him during the Covid lockdown and many days he was exactly what was needed. It is impossible to watch a video without multiple explosions of laughter. I am curious to learn more about him. Oh, to have such talent!
Thank you, Miselle, for reaching out to me. A friend very close to me met with an unexpected death. It will take some time to heal. I know I'm not alone in experiencing times like these, but it will hurt for a while.
I am very sorry for your loss, I lost my brother this past January. Loss is part of life, indeed, it is never easy, but to be blindsided by it is truly awful.
I am sorry to hear about the loss of your brother, Miselle. We are supposed to feel better with the passing of time, which is, I think, how it should be. Troubling, though, is after you stop counting the days that pass, you find yourself many months and years later incredulous that it was so long ago that you lost them.
Yet for now, it has been most comforting conversing with you. Much appreciated.
Indeed, I am one who visits them at the cemetery. It does give me a bit of peace. As you pointed out, I was there a week ago thinking "25 years for Mom? 10 for Dad? 5 for sister and 3 her husband?" My family are all nature lovers. In the fall, when there are bags of nuts in the shell available, I buy them and leave a nut at each grave for the animal visitors. In summer, a pinecone. My Dad visited my Mom daily up till he was near the end. He'd say "she wrote to me every single day in WW2" He feared we'd forget Mom (how could we?) and seeing the pinecones meant a lot to him. I go there about monthly now, but think of them daily.
My very close friend, she was cremated and scattered in Hawaii per her request. I sort of miss a spot to visit so I visit in my mind. I hope that in time you will find a way to honor your friendship and garner some peace from that.
Wow, Miselle. That's quite a ritual you keep for your loved ones. I am impressed with including the critters in your visit. Such a lovely and loving family you belong to! My sister and I make semi regular visits to my mom (24 yrs) and two dads (65 and 43 yrs). My mom insisted on burying her second husband nearby her first husband, and then herself in the same spot. So it's sort of a one-stop shop for paying respects.
Hmm, I do recall you mentioning that, Ally. As Miselle said, it's something we experience as part of life. Dang it all. Feeling better, though, especially when I hear from you every day...my link to the West!
I'm so sorry, Lynell, Miselle, and Ally, for your losses. Losses hurt and are the price for having loved and cared about someone. May good memories help your healing.
My mother donated her body to a medical school, so no gravestone. We're getting a memorial brick at the donation program, but I decided if you can't bring Mohammad to the mountain...I'm making portable memorial stones for our family members to share her memory.
Thanks so much for this Lynell. I really needed it. So sorry you are going thru a hard time right now. I spent last night just watching stand up comics as I couldn't deal with anything else. Laughter is a great distraction.
Well, I can't find the specific book (if I've even recalled correctly) but my recollection is that the man in question was struggling with depression or an illness and instituted a daily diet of comedy shows on television (this was several decades ago so my recollection is faint). While searching, I was found several other interesting items and also was reminded of Laughter Yoga. It does work even when or if you begin faking the laughter (I've experienced this myself in a group I belong to). In any case, Randy R. makes clear that it is especially important to us during the current political idiocy.
Lynell, After watching your gift to us through 'Randy Rainbow's latest, I don't want to hear another thing! Humor, music, talent and the TRUTH are such beautiful things. Thank you, LYNELL!
Morning, Lynell! Sorry you got some personal sad news. I hope all is well in your world.
This RR video is amazing. While there is much to love, I have two comments: There are ALWAYS more show tunes, and I do understand what he is saying, and I loved the "Mr. Rainbow" on his lectern!
Well, dang, Ally. Sorry to miss your wonderful reply. I actually got on a Randy Rainbow "loop" this afternoon, watching videos I hadn't seen before as well as Mary Trump's hour's long interview. (I actually took his "running out of show tunes" to be a joke.) He said he grew up listening to musical songs that his mother supplied him. His attention to detail putting those shows together is phenomenal...doing it all by himself, in his living room!
Wonderful. I'm from Kittery, Maine, way down at the NH border. I went to the University of Maine in Orono. The closest I ever got to Moosehead Lake was Millinocket, where my ex-wife was from. I miss Maine a lot. My favorite season is Late Summer/Fall. That's when colors come out in Maine.
I'm glad Mary Oliver's Loon poem brought back the memories.
My answer it appears. I summered in a cabin with my young children on Moosehead Lake for 2 complete summers. When the children had fledged, I moved to Eastport, ME and now ten years later, I have followed them to the West Coast. I now call Bishop, CA home.
...... his heavy head uplifted ...... I swoon and have to hold onto something. Richard, tell me something about Mary Oliver.. I moved to Bishop, CA from Eastport, ME. In which place may I have been introduced to Mary Oliver? Better to email jkpoffley@yahoo.com
I am not tech. savvy and could probably never find this conversation again. Jim Poffley

I wrote this to accompany last week’s photo. It really spoke to me.
One Transcendent Moment
For one transcendent moment,
grey and pink clouds,
shaped like an awning
hover over a glistening, shale-rolled sea,
capturing glimmers of pink
from the magical carpet above.
For one transcendent moment,
the gold and copper tones of sun
peep over the horizon
with their eternal promise of
another day – a day to cherish
as sea and sky herald bliss.
For one transcendent moment,
ashen wisps of clouds float above
the shimmering waters like a flock of
dusky birds headed for the glow --
as though beckoning a brand new
age of transformation and of becoming.
Abide in each transcendent moment …
Morning, Rowshan! You're the best.
Yes she is!
Thank you, Cynthia!
You're welcome ❤️
Morning, Lynell! Thanks so much.
Wishing, too, for that transcendent moment illuminating that true spirit of democracy for all eyes to see and ears to hear....and hearts to grasp.
Wishing for it, too, K!
Lovely meditation to begin this new day. Thank you, Rowshan.
Thank you so much, Carol!
I am just up out here on the west coast.....lovely thoughts to start the day. Thank you.

I must be kissin' cousins with RR, because, also, when he chose the "Yesterday" song, it was that very song that I thought of when first all those parodies came out on Twitter surrounding tfg's outtakes.
That’s when I nearly fell off my chair. 😂
🤣Yes!
Hopefully, Sue, when this national nightmare is finally over he will thrive in some other way without needing tfg front and center.
I didn't know about this, THANK YOU! Forwarding onto all my fellow RR fans.
Keeping you close in thought as you weather your news, Lynell.
🗽🌈
It's nice to know I can always count on you, my beautiful friend.
Whatever distressed you, hope your spirits improve soon.
I saw Randy also, what a fabulous treat! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you, Miselle, for reaching out to me. A friend very close to me met with an unexpected death. It will take some time to heal. I know I'm not alone in experiencing times like these, but it will hurt for a while.
Randy = Treat, for sure!
Yet, at the same time, it still seems like just yesterday. Hugs.
I've just been through that very thing myself recently; I hold you in my heart.
This is a fabulous idea, Ellie; a way to keep your mother close. May we all be blessed by the memory of the ones we love.
What a wonderful idea.
Awesome, needed that breath of fresh air
Thanks so much for this Lynell. I really needed it. So sorry you are going thru a hard time right now. I spent last night just watching stand up comics as I couldn't deal with anything else. Laughter is a great distraction.
Who was it, years ago, who healed himself the same way then wrote a book "Laughter is the Best Medicine"? Maybe I'll look it up later.

Thank you, Jeanne. I agree. It's doing me a world of good today, especially knowing you and others are enjoying what I posted.
Lynell, After watching your gift to us through 'Randy Rainbow's latest, I don't want to hear another thing! Humor, music, talent and the TRUTH are such beautiful things. Thank you, LYNELL!
🌞
OMG, I love Randy Rainbow!!! Thanks for the chuckle.
Will run, not walk, to see this on a bigger screen
Enjoy a well earned rest! I immensely enjoy all your well researched posts
Thank you Heather.
Rabbit holes and rest…
Sounds like a plan.
Ah, I can feel the onshore breeze, smell the salt air. Feels like late in the summer school holiday...
Thank you for all you do!❤️
Thank you for the beautiful photo.
Please get some rest - looking forward to your next letter.
Get some rest. Take the weekend off-you deserve it. 😴
Heather, your early morning hours have reminded of a poem by Mary Oliver:
The Loon
Not quite four a.m., when the rapture of being alive
strikes me from sleep, and I rise
from the comfortable bed and go
to another room, where my books are lined up
in their neat and colorful rows. How
magical they are! I choose one
and open it. Soon
I have wandered over the waves of the words
to the temple of thought.
And then I hear
outside, over the actual waves, the small,
perfect voice of the loon. He is also awake,
and with his heavy head uplifted he calls out
to the fading moon, to the pink flush
swelling in the east that, soon,
will become the long, reasonable day..
Inside the house
it is still dark, except for the pool of lamplight
in which I am sitting.
I do not close the book.
Neither, for a long while, do I read on.
Brings me back to a time of camping at Moosehead Lake. I went for an early morning walk and was blessed to see a lone loon in the mist.
Aaaaahhhhhhh.......
...... his heavy head uplifted ......
Jim Poffley
Hi, Jim,
I shall email 'something about Mary Oliver' to you. She was one of the greatest poets. More later.
Rich
Richard, I'll look forward to reading whatever you find re: Mary Oliver. Jim
Sleep tight!
