Many English men who settled the south, particularly Virginia, were “second sons” whose prospects were lost to primogeniture. They were looking to establish a new aristocracy for themselves in the colonies.

Many English men who settled the south, particularly Virginia, were “second sons” whose prospects were lost to primogeniture. They were looking to establish a new aristocracy for themselves in the colonies.
US slave plantation estates seem to resemble nothing so much as the feudal manor houses and estates of Europe, although with even more brutal exploitation of the workforce. It seems the height of hypocrisy and doublethink to assert egalitarian principles and hold slaves, but at least the founders transferred egalitarian principles into law, rather than creating another king. and succeeding generations have expanded access to them.
But any sort of law can be corrupted if we don't fight to uphold it, and that fight remains before us now.
