"Trump’s former national security advisor, retired General Michael Flynn, who pled guilty under oath twice to lying to the FBI only to get a pardon from Trump, was vocal over the weekend about what a future under Trump would look like. He was asked at the Rod of Iron Freedom Festival Friday night if he'd “sit at the head of a military tribunal to not only drain the swamp, but imprison the swamp, and on a few occasions, execute the swamp.” Flynn responded, “What your sentiment is about is accountability … I definitely believe we need accountability.” After pointing out Trump would need to win first for there to be “a way to get after this,” Flynn concluded, “These people are already up to no good … We win, and then Katie Bar the door. Believe me, the gates of hell, my hell will be unleashed.”"

Actually, as I read Project 2025, with my Democrats Abroad Project 2025 book club there is so much to fear. Certainly the military is going to be in chaos for one with what is planned. These people really want to destroy our nation and thus get rid of the Constitution which they want to refashion as a White Supremacist Christian Nationalist Utopia. Ironically, like the Crusaders of the 30 years war in Europe, they are using "faith" and supposed Christianity to claim the moral high ground for taking over our country and reaffirming it as a White, male paradise. Since the US is already a White Supremacist society since its founding, but has moved far from that ideal at this point with hard fought battles, and resistance, where women, LGBTQ+, and immigrants with all shades of brown skin, and all sorts of physical characteristics, cultural backgrounds, and religions have been able to shape the destiny of this country too. Who I would like to see being reached with this message is not the immovable MAGAs, but the college students who say change the Israel policy or they won't vote for Harris. However, the difficulty with this group, is that the frontal cortex does not fully develop until 24-30. That is the part of the brain responsible for complex problem solving, critical thinking and delayed gratification. All of these would be required for them to take a long term good perspective on the election now. Many are able to do it, but some are also so caught up in their cause that they don't see that a Trump presidency will possibly be worse for people of Gaza, as there will be no more funding for humanitarian aid under such an administration, and Israel will have the full Christian Nationalist backing. Not only that, but they will be shipped to other countries, or rounded up and put into concentration camps for protesting because there will be no free speech. It would be instructive to have them look at Russia and see what happens there, because that is their likely fate. Democratic politician David Pepper has written a series that is turned into a podcast as well, called Trumps Project 2025, which is a fictionalized version of what life would be like under Project 2025 if implemented. On this point, we are in agreement. The NYT and WAPO are covering General Miley’s comments in Bob Woodward’s new book extensively.

There is, however, the factor of ‘’Both Sidesism’’ practiced by large segments of the media, that benefits Trump by covering him as if he were somehow a legitimate opponent to VP Harris.

Professor Timothy Snyder discusses it at length in his October 12 Substack, ‘’Both Sides’’.

His piece is too dense for a nutshell synopsis, but the following quote gives one a taste of his argument.

"Why does American television and press “both-sides” our politics? Why are such different presidential candidates presented as equally flawed? Why do the outrages of Trump, for example at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, lead to the humiliation of Biden?

Both-Sidesism is the habit of reducing the world into two perspectives, treating the two as fundamentally alike, and then ignoring or adjusting the data. One cause of this odd behavior is the ownership of media companies. Another is fear.''

What I have tried to suggest is this; Biden didn’t want to in any way, continue in the footsteps of Trump on border issues. I’m not talking about a stupid wall although I might not fully discount that. No, he could have issued an executive order but as his homeland secretary Myorka once said, “It wouldn’t hold up in court.” How myopic a response. Send troops to the border. It was out of control. And whether you believe it or not, the issue is being used against our side. Rather successfully. Some folks can be real dense.

Bill, please tell us exactly how you would have handled the border problems without funding from Congress. Please tell us how you would have decreased the flow of fentanyl which is primarily smuggled by Americans without additional and better detection equipment. And please tell me how we could stem the inevitable tide of humanity fleeing nations run by gangs and ravaged by the Climate Catastrophe.

The potential solutions for much of this were negotiated in Congress, passed in the Senate and about to pass in the House. Trump called the Speaker and killed it.

Or how there were 50 references to Biden's age to every 1 of fpotus's. Would there be a plan for mass deportations if people with white skin were the immigrants streaming into our nation? Would their blood be poison and their genes be criminal?

Most Americans don’t want to face the racism used to keep us divided so elites can hold onto and expand their power.

It’s not just poor, displaced people voting for Trump and the Rs. White people are the only group that vote in higher percentages for the fascism we can see coming. Too many feel they need to be protected from “others”.

As Trump told them this is that last chance they have to “take their country back”. I’ve always wondered who they’re taking it back from…America has never been a “white country” because indigenous people and Africans were here from the beginning.

As a “nation of laws” slaveholders established laws and customs designed to keep the masses divided so they could control labor and power. They used skin color as a dividing line.

White supremacy is woven throughout our society. We’ve made some progress but not enough. We’re reaping what the “founders” sowed.

Expand full comment

Not so, Bill. Biden said he would sign the strongest border security and imigration bill ever written, by very conservative Rebuplicans, in conjuction with Democrats who let them have everything they wanted, just to get it done and signed, and Trump told the Senate and House to kill it so he could keep it as a campaign focus, which he has.

The president has no power over such issues.

Expand full comment

Trump had no authority to do this as he is a private citizen, even if he thinks he should still be president. The Republicans are more loyal to him than their Constitutional obligations and oaths, and it is quite scary to see them do this. It’s quite clear Trump sees himself as above the law, when the Founders intended for the President to be subject to the law. Roberts behaves with surprise that the public hates his decision to put Trump above the law, which shows he really must get out of his ivory tower. The justices who decided U.S. v. Trump just decided to throw out 245 years of precedent to enable a wannabe dictator. Many people are very well aware of this, and are understandably angry about it.

To be accurate Trump as a private citizen has just as much right to "lobby" Congress as you or I do. It's just that his efforts work because the GOP MAGA senators want his support. But it is absolutely true that Biden let this slide until after he started losing in the race and then stepped aside.

The GOP supported his change of heart and they drafted most of the new bill but Trump demanded that the GOP vote no on their own bill. That was "good politics" for them, horrible for us and the country.

Jon, a simple google search shows that this is not true. Just read a Wikipedia article about Biden’s border policies throughout his term, with his first executive order on January 26, 2021.

The border has been an intractable problem for years. Trump’s violent rhetoric only serves to make it harder for us ever to reach a consensus on how to manage it. When even our own side has bought into some of this blame throwing, I wonder what hope we have of finding a solution.

What if Trump had actually hired the 15000 additional agents and placed them in places where they could actually do something? And what if his crappy wall wasn't built so that any 12 year old with a saws-all could breach it. Trump's wall has not been breached over 5000 times and counting. They have full time crews fixing the holes.

And which countries are actually going to allow our deportees to be returned? Good luck with that. Trump isn't going to round up Europeans unless their skin isn't white. And what about indigenous people? Where is he going to deport them to? South Dakota?

Sorry more nonsense here. The mainstream media does NOT "back" Trump. Prove it. A few outlets (Fox News, WSJ and a few others) do but most of the major outlets do not. Certainly not the NYT or WaPo nor the major networks nor PBS. They do cover him a lot but he had been more active on the "interview" circuits altho Kamala has picked that up in the past week or so. Coverage is NOT support. It is what news organizations are supposed to do.

But it seems a lot of people here do not understand how news organizations work which is sad because that should have been part of their civics education in high school.

Jen Psaki is not hedging any bets. Jen's guest on her Saturday show, Inside With Jen Psaki at the 21 minute mark was NEAL KATYA,L the former U.S. Solicitor & the top appellate attorney in the Land. Neal opened his answers to Jen Psaki with the following statement:

"Normally I am voice of calm". Not yesterday. Neal sated that the Country is facing a "coming massive crises" from 11/5/24 the election date to 1/6/2025 next year & beyond.

Neal reminded the Nation that in the 2020 National election Trump lost the electoral vote count by seventy-four (74) electoral votes. Biden received 306, Trump got only 232. Thus, in 2020 Trump had to "run the table" meaning he overturn the election tax in many states while disenfranchising millions of Voters.

Citing Jen Psaki's data at the opening of her show, Neal said upcoming national election

may be decided only by 1 or 2 states.

Trump will put "massive pressure" on the following targets in those few states:

*. Declare Victory regardless of true final results;

* Pressure the state Courts;

* Pressure the state Legislatures;

*. Pressure state Governors - "I only need ..."

* Manipulate local election boards like in GA to disrupt state certification

The Electoral Reform Act has created some weak guardrails that Neal Katyal believes can be overturned by simple majority votes.

Take personal political & democratic actions. I note that 2 states have replaced the now missing Voting Rights Act (VRA) with state equivalents of the same legal protections including Minnesota on 5/24 & New York on 6/22. Michigan, Florida, New Jersey & Maryland have similar Legislation in the works. Check your state & support these positive state actions.

I have already voted by mail. I will track the fact of both receipt & the counting of my vote.

Every positive action is another step forward in a resounding victory for Kam & the Union.

From Vanity Fair:

Last April, perhaps in a surge of Czech nationalism, Ivana Trump told her lawyer Michael Kennedy that from time to time her husband reads a book of Hitler’s collected speeches, My New Order, which he keeps in a cabinet by his bed. Kennedy now guards a copy of My New Order in a closet at his office, as if it were a grenade. Hitler’s speeches, from his earliest days up through the Phony War of 1939, reveal his extraordinary ability as a master propagandist.

“Did your cousin John give you the Hitler speeches?” I asked Trump.

Trump hesitated. “Who told you that?”

“I don’t remember,” I said.

“Actually, it was my friend Marty Davis from Paramount who gave me a copy of Mein Kampf, and he’s a Jew.” (“I did give him a book about Hitler,” Marty Davis said. “But it was My New Order, Hitler’s speeches, not Mein Kampf. I thought he would find it interesting. I am his friend, but I’m not Jewish.”)

Later, Trump returned to this subject. “If I had these speeches, and I am not saying that I do, I would never read them.”

After 4 years of incompetent governance 81 million voters fired Trump . The winner, Joe Biden, had campaigned from his basement. As President Biden overcame Covid, reduced inflation and oversaw legislation that put the economy squarely back on its feet while avoiding a recession and creating millions of new jobs. Trump advanced a dystopian view of everything without relation to fact. A majority of Americans are not ignorant or evil enough to fall for the rantings of a narcissistic sociopath. They rejected him in 2020. There’s no reason they will change their minds to now support Trump in 2024 and reject a well liked, competent and articulate Kamala Harris. One of the fallacies that many people seem to hold is that because someone appears to have been or is successful in their business venture(s) that this individual would be successful in the role of POTUS. This is not necessarily so, as the objectives of most businesses is one of maximizing profits and for publicly held corporations - it is creating value for it’s shareholders. The role of government(s) is almost entirely opposite. Some of the skills possessed by successful business persons can be applied in governmental leadership positions, but trump - who operates basically a glorified “mom and pop” entity in the other peoples’ money sector (real estate) possesses and exhibits very few of the skills to be a successful CEO of a publicly-held corporation!

Expand full comment

They don’t understand the purposes of business and government are different. 45 years of unregulated capitalism has allowed a small percentage of the population to acquire obscene amounts of money, which they use to undermine the government so that it does not work for the people, but for themselves. It has also created a much larger class of poor people and decimated a middle class that was once admired, although we had a system designed to leave certain groups of people out of the middle class.

We need to rediscover the need to address the common good of all citizens, regardless of their background or origins. We cannot afford to leave people out. White rural voters are justifiably angry about the decimation of their opportunities, but propaganda outlets who cater to their anger encourage them to blame the wrong people. Professors and minority citizens didn’t consolidate their farms or ship their jobs overseas, it was greedy executives who did that.

Kamala Harris needs a Democratic Congress, and key Senate and House races are running neck and neck. Pick any of the closest races to support with your donations and/or volunteer efforts, such as:

Colin Allred for Texas

Sherrod Brown for Ohio

Debbie Mucarsel-Powell for Florida

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/polls/senate/2024/

For the House, open FiveThirtyEight and scroll to "What are the closest races?" 25 states have close races on this list:

https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/2024-election-forecast/house/

As for Trump's campaigning in blue states, maybe he's actually campaigning in competitive House districts to support his MAGA sycophants in order to subvert the certification of Kamala Harris as President. This appears to have been the case for his Coachella rally where a really good Democratic candidate, Will Rollins, is within a few points of MAGA incumbent Ken Calvert for CA-41. Calvert co-hosted a fundraiser for Trump back in March, voted to overturn the 2020 election, and continues to be a Trumper election-denier.

As we look for where our donor dollars will have the most impact, Will Rollins CA-41 is one of the pick-up seats we can flip toward a much needed Dem majority in the House of Representatives.

It makes even more sense after 2022 (Dobbs and the overturn of Roe) and all the special election and referendums since then where Dems overperformed.

Yes!! I was just getting to copy parts of it with a link and put it in as a comment in every NYT's article (regardless of the section, i.e. lifestyle, cooking, etc!!) I'll wager they won't print it. "Above the fold" in the major newspapers and MSM is all about trump this and trump that . . . .it is beyond sickening. When Ohio went for trump in 2016, the collective primal scream friends and I let out could probably been heard for miles!! And, we have never stopped.

I was out to dinner with a group from a golf outing -many who are readers of the "Letter". A couple of the ladies (mid-70's) noted they were becoming increasingly nervous and terrified at the thought of trump winning (which he could only do by cheating) and we pondered how Heather holds it together and, if underneath it all, is she as terrified as the rest of us?

Expand full comment

Listen to Heather’s post again. The people that feel left behind and want to go back to the past patriarchal white Christian dominated society will continue to support him because he gives them someone to hate and not take responsibility for themselves. The crazier and more violent and repulsive, the more intense their support. As to the more educated and middle class members of the US, I just don’t get it. I ask myself the same about Hitler’s rise to power. That’s why they are using his playbook, they know it worked and is working for him. I am very very worried and will continue biting my nails for the next month at least.

Why isn’t there more of a grassroots movement to get democratic voters registered and to the polls, door-to-door?

Expand full comment

Where do the Trump supporters get the idea that we need a dictator? You’re correct in that Trump gives them people to hate, and that they are unwilling to take responsibility for themselves and want to cede their power to a dictator. It won’t be long before they will bitterly regret having supported him, because he’ll give them hate figures, but he won’t lift a finger to help them. Trump wants unlimited power, he wants to receive unlimited wealth as a dictator, and he wants to govern out of spite and revenge. None of these things are good reasons to govern.

I would think the example of how Adolf Hitler came to power would be a warning to Americans about the danger of empowering someone like Trump, but sadly, some of us are ignorant of the dangers, and they are not educated to know how the government is supposed to function as opposed to how it does function. Teaching to standardized testing has been damaging to two generations of students.

Why I am very optimistic about Nov... It's not the polls... It's the 2020 numbers.

Here's my back of the envelope forecast:

The Joe Biden coalition of voters beat Donald Trump by 7 million votes in 2020, +81 million to 74 million, that is + 7 million votes! So the first question in forecasting this Nov's outcome is...Has Harris/Walz pulled the Biden coalition back together?

Miraculously, the answer is yes. Mostly..

Mostly means 3.5 million Biden voters have passed away based on mortality averages and it's likely 5-6 million voters simply can't vote for a Black woman for president. This includes Black and Latino men and White guys who believe a woman leader is either "weak" or "strident", both unattractive attributes in a President.

This leaves Kamala with 72-73 million votes from the Biden coalition. What is she likely to add? 7 million young first time voters, 3 million activated, pro-reproductive freedom white women voters, 1 million extra Black woman voters, 2 million Never Trump Republicans, Independents and Haley voters.

This brings Kamal's vote total to 85-86 million. And there is potential for more Harris votes because Trump is such a more deranged, repellant candidate this cycle than he was in 2020.

And what does Trump have? Trump starts with 71 million because 3 million of his voters have passed away. He adds maybe 3 million of those voters who cannot vote for a Black woman, 2 million young first time voters plus 1 million Black and Latino male voters. That gives Trump 75-77 million votes tops.

I think this total is optimistic because, as I said above, Trump is a more deranged, repellant candidate than he was in 2020. It's very likely that Trump will lose more voters and not get to the 74 million he got in 2020.

We have at least 10-15 million volunteers working day and night to put Kamala over the top. Trump has Trump and a very small ground game.

With my forecast, Kamala is likely to win the popular vote by 6%-7%. 53% to 47%. Enough to win the electoral vote with 4 swing states. And what about those scary polls? The polls have become particularly unstable but are are trending in Harris direction. Harris is up by 4-5% in more polls. If she wins by +6% the pollsters can say it was in the margin of error so why were we so irate? Actually because political polls, no matter how unbiased they try to be, partisan political tools that journalists use to tell election stories.

We just have to remember, polls don't win elections, voters do! So we have to keep going at 150% and sleep after Nov. 5th

How many of the deceased in Trump’s camp died because of his Covid 19 advice?

Expand full comment

He lost quite a few. Trump supporters never thought COVID-19 would be a problem for them and were content to have the pandemic ravage poorer urban communities, then they refused to get vaccinated against COVID because of all the antivax garbage that appeared on social media. Quite a few died, while others experienced permanent health damage due to ignoring sensible medical advice.

We have to keep going up through January 6 and beyond. I also hope with all my hopefulness that there are enough swing states that will tip the electoral college votes to be overwhelming for Harris. The EC must NOT choose our next president.

My hubby and I watched The Manchurian Candidate (a remake with Denzel, Streep, etc.) and we kept saying "Woah!"...it is frightening how a movie from 2004 could have a plot line out of today's "politics". Frightening...and disgusting. Fear...even back then, it was all about instilling fear.

General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff under Trump: “He is the most dangerous person ever. I had suspicions when I talked to you about his mental decline and so forth, but now I realize he’s a total fascist. He is now the most dangerous person to this country…a fascist to the core.” No wonder he responded to Michelle Obama, whom he sat next to at Bident's Inauguration, to her comment, "I'll bet you're glad to be out of there" -- General Milley said, "You have NO IDEA." Now we all know what he knew.

My guess Milley is caught between the need to speak out and (even in retirement) professional conduct. He was pretty up front in his retirement speech:

“We are unique among the world’s militaries. We don’t take an oath to a country. We don’t take an oath to a tribe. We don’t take an oath to a religion. We don’t take an oath to a king, or a queen, or to a tyrant or a dictator,” Milley said at a ceremony in Virginia.

“And we don’t take an oath to a wannabe dictator,” he continued. “We don’t take an oath to an individual. We take an oath to the Constitution, and we take an oath to the idea that is America — and we’re willing to die to protect it.”

Expand full comment

You are right - Milley upheld professional conduct and standards, not even mentioning tfg in his retirement speech (about a year ago). At that time the felon and wannabe dictator who is trying to get back into the White House had already threatened him with execution, something that should be reserved for traitors like trump.

I think that Kamala needs to use stronger language to call him out. She succeeded in taunting him in the debate. She should talk about his refusal of a second saying “he’s afraid because I wiped the floor with him the first time”. What happened to our tough prosecutor???

Maybe she's not the person who has to get tough. Milley had the right idea, and bravo to Bob Woodward and his publisher for rush printing his book. And if Republicans are not cooperating with preparing for a smooth transition should they wind, it's time now to blow the whistle loud and often. We must demand a Constitutional government.

My worry abound this advice from political wonks like Carville is that there is such a gender driven double standard at play …it basically oozes from the press headlines and comments like Huckabee-Sanders about the need for Harris to be humble. She is walking a tightrope. For some reason the US cannot tolerate aggressively strong women leaders it seems on the surface at least. Compare this to Iron woman Margaret Thatcher in the UK who ascended to and held power for so long there. Harris and her campaign know that this election is an existential moment and they have the Hillary Clinton collapse in the immediate rear view mirror. It is crucial they court the middle and the middle is pretty muddled.

I've seen a lot of men, mostly black, saying they will not vote for Harris because other world leaders will walk all over a woman. Republicans want to weaken any strong democratic woman by saying these things & I too think Harris should hit him hard.

Brilliant as usual Heather. But maybe you can explain to us where our major news outlets have disappeared to, and why? Why are there not 2-inch headlines about this on the NY Times and Washington Post? How are the ABC and CBS Sunday morning news programs able to hold twee little polite interviews with the enablers of this clearly insane wannabe dictator? Have we as a nation completely lost our will to survive as the world’s preeminent democracy? Is there historical precedent or discernible reason for this? Simple. He won't.

The machine working to disenfranchise voters, and the paid off judges, may try to hand it to him anyway. But if we bury them in a Blue Wave turnout the judges will hide, hoping to survive for another day.

But they won't.
