There are terrible stories in the Torah and I wouldn't be surprised if there are also terrible stories in the Christian Bible. But the cherry-picking and twisting of the text to achieve specific ends would be different. For instance, the sin of Sodom and Gomorrah was mainly lack of hospitality towards strangers. Personally, I use the words of the Torah as a framework to look at how to connect the past to the present. Sometimes it's really a stretch. I don't see how these words can be taken as literal directions for how to live now—there are so many contradictions.
