Exactly right, Anne. That photograph, with its beautiful contrast of light and dark, captures our uncertain and worrying era quite well. Right now it feels as if we are deep in darkness, but that boat, which can take those on it somewhere they want to go, is in the light. The election was a horrible disappointment, but our role now is to find the light and move toward it with determination and sense of purpose. As I'm typing this, I'm listening to a beautiful mass by Palestrina that reminds me that, no matter what, there is still beauty in the world. Kamala Harris believed that we can create a better, fairer America, and she told us she isn't giving up the fight. We shouldn't give up the fight either. We can be on that boat, moving toward the light. It's up to us to get on board and head in the right direction.

Well-said, Linda! We must find that light and keep working towards it.

The light shines in the darkness and the darkness does not overcome it.

These are all wonderful images with meaning. The one that hangs me up is using the word fight at this point. That's what we've been doing all along and I am myself a very tired warrior, much more attuned to the various ways of loving that I actually believe we're all capable of

doing in some way or other. Love is a lot more difficult to resist don't you think? Being a sort of a gardener I relate to things like planting seeds and loving what comes up. In my very crowded little garden spot outside my door the only thing I have to do besides plant, water and weed is to readjust the use of space between the crawlers the sprawlers and the

climbers, allowing all of them to nurture each other and just get along.

Thanks for writing, Robin. Believe me, I too am a weary warrior. I turn 78 next week, and I have ovarian cancer which is fortunately in remission for now. I would much rather spend whatever remains of my life focusing on love, beauty and nature. That said, Robert Frost was right. "The woods are lovely dark and deep, but I have promises to keep." When my son was diagnosed with a seizure disorder at 5 months old, I promised him I would always love him, no matter what. To me, that meant doing everything I could to give him the best possible chance for a good, happy life. He is now 46 years old, but he functions at about the level of a 5 year old. Every service he needs to survive is funded by Medicaid which I expect Trump and his enablers will attack and try to gut as soon as they can. I know this because that is what they spent most of 2017 doing during Trump's first term along with trying to overturn the Affordable Care Act. We saved the Affordable Care Act and Medicaid then, but we had to fight to do it. I'm afraid that despite my exhaustion, I will have to fight yet again with many other likeminded people because that is the only way to keep my promise to my son. How I wish it were otherwise.

If medals meant anything we domestic warriors would be absolutely weighed down by them, and I thought I deserved one back in the '70s. Wouldn't that change the meaning of things in this upside down life. I just hope that you are not alone in at least your efforts for health rights and hopefully your home situation to some extent. It is helpful to know that the Biden Harris admin is very very busy putting any guardrails in place that can be, as is the military etc etc. What is very likely to happen with the fringe voters who passed over their own ignorance will find out what they've actually done in very short order and get at least a little rebellious if not a lot. I'm watching for it and doing me everything I can here and where I live. Take care of yourself to stay strong as well. Sending love.

Thanks so much, Robin. You're so right. If each of us who deserved even one medal got it, we would keep the company that makes them very busy. I went to the Women's March in DC back in 2017 along with a half million other people. Everyone there, and in all of the other places in the world who marched that day in defiance of Trump, deserves a medal too. Did you remember seeing a picture of people on a boat in Antarctica participating?! I hope to get to this year's march too.

Despite the things I worry about, I have been lucky. We were told that our son might always remain an infant, but he walks, talks, rides a bike and loves music, especially Sesame Street songs. I have been married for 56 years, and my husband is still with me. He is nearly 83, but mostly in good health. When I was diagnosed with cancer three years ago, I didn't know if I would ever see another birthday, but I'll turn 78 next week. Every day, I give thanks for all of those researchers who were good at science when I was not. They go to work every day and find out new things that help us all. One of the things I wish I could do is nurture a garden the way you do. Please choose a wonderful plant on my behalf and put it in that garden of yours. I will enjoy knowing it's there.

Oh, one more thing. I have 3 wonderful cats, so, although I still have a child, I am a cat lady. I plan to keep my Cat Ladies for Kamala bumper sticker on my car indefinitely. My husband's car still sports a Hillary for America bumper sticker. We are stubborn people who follow Winston Churchill's advice. There is a story, perhaps apocryphal, that Sir Winston, who knew a thing or two about overcoming difficult challenges, was asked to give a commencement speech at Harvard shortly after WW II. When it was his turn to speak, he stood up, went to the podium and said "Never give up. Never give up. Never give up. Then he sat down. If you want to win a war, that's the way to go.

If there's ever been a time when this country needs peace and tranquility, it's now. It's either seek peace and tranquility, or wither up with anger, disbelief, and unhealthy stress and anxiety.

I am with you, Alexandra, in your gratitude to Heather. I was so despondent starting in 2016 when I was surrounded by Trump followers, that I thought I was the misguided one. Then someone suggested reading Heather's letters, and I realized that I was not alone in my feelings of dissolutionment. The letters, and the comments, got me through the last years of turmoil and fear.

Today, for the first time in 50 years, I'm not dressing up, gathering my music, and heading to a church to be the pianist. When I realized that everyone at my church was not offended and shocked by DT's illegal and immoral words and actions, and that"Christians" all over this nation agreed with them, I resigned my position as pianist. What?? Yes, I just couldn't sit on the piano bench, seething inside, when church is supposed to be a quiet, nurturing, and loving place. I would find no sanctuary there. Of course, everyone is shocked and disappointed in my decision. I wish them love, joy, and peace, I wish them tolerance and compassion as they quote scriptures about loving your neighbor.

I have some wonderful, supportive,

loving friends at the church, and for eight years, I kept my mouth shut, trying to underrstand their convictions and stance. I couldn't keep quiet any longer.

Of course, they have a right to their opinions, and someone told me that they wouldn't dare lose friends over politics. I'm glad they can feel that way. This isn't just a differing opinion of the color of the church carpet. It's a fundamental difference in what's just, right, and good.

I've chosen this path, and I'll be on it by myself, but I just couldn't stay on the path that was "the way" at the church.

Maybe I can be of service somewhere.

Thanks everyone, for your comments over the years, that sustained me and gave me hope.

May we all find peace in this chaos.❤️

I would like to suggest a place for you to think about visiting regularly. It is where many live, hopefully temporarily, who are in need of your love and compassion. And they have this unique ability to return the same to you when you are with them. Sounds weird, I know, but it is your local humane society, and they need regular volunteers to help in so many ways with the animals there. Animals are all about love and nurturing, just not too much into quiet at the shelter. There are several people I know who volunteer weekly and find so much true joy and purpose in their time with the animals. Just a thought…..

Pam, you know your heart needs relief and distance from those who think Agent Orange, 47, is accepted by the mass of American "Christians." Please remember that the majority of Jesus' people rejected his wisdom and love. Sorry to say that numbers don't tell the whole story, even after centuries of moral progress by the human race. The great prophet of Nazareth taught that the poor in spirit already possess the realm of total peace and happiness, through their faith. This faith is not in a supremely powerful and punishing dictator but a consoling healer, wiper away of all tears, full to overflowing with mercy and forgiveness for those who trust in the spirit of goodness. The "remnant" of faithful Israelites in the Hebrew Bible foreshadow the dash of salt of the earth, the tiny mustard seed that grows into a massive bush that shelters the powerless birds of the air. Seek and you will find others with your faith, hope and love, all God's children trying to make straight the way of justice, peace and fellowship, the will of your eternal Spirit of Life.

I think the blatant use of lies is going to be a standout reason for Kamala's overall close loss. Education seems to have been a significant divide, with those with high school or less tended to vote Trump, and those with post-secondary tended to vote for Harris. Trouble also is the shift to Trump cut across almost all demographics, and across the country. The right-wing ceaselessly attacked Biden on everything imaginable. Post pandemic inflation, a world wide phenomenon, thanks to the crippling of supply chains in the main, has been dumped on him, yet in the past year it has been tamed, the economy shooting forward, wages have began to exceed a more modest inflation rate, employment has reached "full" at abt 4%... Trump will inherit all that. Biden had to deal with the terrible effects of Covid, for which many Americans died needlessly thanks to the Trump administration. When the Republicans are dedicated to one thing, gaining and keeping power, and will use any means to achieve that end, and the Democrats, on the other hand, are an actual political party, dedicated to serving a big-tent constituency, ranging from leftist progressives to anti-trump Republicans and providing them and all Americans with actual policy, one can see that the advantages, in terms of streamlined messaging, goes to the party that can say anything and lie with impunity, as they have no actual message.

I wish I were educated enough about the Electoral College to be able to make an argument (as in argument in a civil debate) for *somehow* modifying the EC rather than just eliminating it. Some are almost proud of their height of angst! While we felt that way while we were stunned, we cannot allow ourselves to continue with those feelings. There is work to do, minds to use, lessons to be learned, and the future can be ours. Calmness and smiles work wonders. Remember what our mothers told us, “Frowns cause more wrinkles then smiles!” Get to work early! Use you Kamala-Tim energy locally NOW!! She endowed us with a strong spirit!! Honor her service! Thank you, Heather, for sharing your wisdom! Thanks again, Michael!

Understood and I love the image. Coming back to your home port after a day at sea is a welcome run, or might be a reach in this case. There is a relaxed sense with a decent wind and the sound of the water that nurses you back into your home port. Even knowing the work ahead...sails down, cushions stowed, ropes coiled, lines secured and the mooring picked up...It is a restful ride home. Looking forward to another sail such as that next summer on MDI.

“If the game runs sometimes against us at home,

we must have patience till luck turns,

& then we shall have an opportunity

of winning back the principles we have lost.

For this is a game where principles are the stake.

Better luck, therefore, to us all

Letter to John Taylor (1798)
