Wayne County, Michigan: I tip my hat to all those people who knew how to seize that moment, or 2 hours, of vociferous civic engagement to right a wrong in order to certify the election results--which were 68% for Biden and 31% for Trump. They are heroes of the day, and it is inspirational to listen to Ned Staebler, a Wayne County Board Member of Canvassers, call out the two Republican members who were refusing to certify. (See HCR's link.)

I grew up in Wayne County, specifically in Livonia, MI. It is home to UAW 182 and a gazillion auto workers. From my perch now in Baltimore, I rate Ned Staebler's speech vivid, unequivocal, and "Livonia ardent." I applaud his robust defence of voting rights. My fear now, with armed domestic terrorists crashing around Michigan in their last gasp of "patriotism", is for Staebler and his family. In this "world of Trump," may they be protected from all harm.

Especially since tRump and his minions continue to incite violence in Michigan. (Michiganders should “Rise Up” against our governor-“Dr.” Atlas”.

I live on Michigan, applaud Gov. Whitmer and our health department for making the difficult decisions, for being focused on keeping ALL Michiganders safe.

Ned Stabler needs to be heard by all Americans. Great way to dress down two clearly racist Canvassers.

Here is Ned Staebler's speech. He calls out the two Republicans very effectively! We need more super-hero Americans like Mr. Staebler speaking up. Kudos for Freedom, Truth and the American Way! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B6BFYOuCY_c

It’s interesting. Republicans and conservatives constantly accuse Democrats and the left of “hating America” and “destroying traditional values.” Yet, everything Trump does now is aimed at weakening and damaging America, its institutions and standing in the world. And, his supporters don’t just go along with it, but cheer and enable him.

Who really hates America?

Heather, thank you for making some sense out of this jumble of activity. The devious scheming of the outgoing administration is frightening. Your reassurance through your letters and chats means more to me, and I’m sure the rest of our growing HCR community, more than you’ll know. Even though you can’t tell us what’s to come, you use your historical perspective to calm us and keep us appreciating that the sun will keep rising and we will keep fighting for our democracy.

With Respect and Appreciation...

Once again the Republicans leave a mess for a Democrat to clean up, with an opposition party throwing up every possible obstacle. Unlike Bush II, Trump is willfully breaking everything he can on the way out.

Kudos to Christopher Krebs. The only way to churn through the Trump Administration and come out with one's reputation more or less intact is to be fired by the Fat Man on twitter; an indication you were good at your job and posess some degree of personal integrity.

I've never seen anything like the mass delusion in the Trump orbit. Lindsay Graham has joined the Mango Moron in believing they are all wearing invisibility capes or something! The brazenness says to me they have literally gone around the bend into insanity.

It's terrifying.

I agree. I just typed out a similar comment but yours does the job with fewer words! My question is how can this nonsense be stopped? It has gone on long enough. It doesn't look like the Trump and Lindsay Graham (plus William Hartmann and Monica Palmer will ever see reality again.

What is happening in our government, in our country is so disheartening. I would be in complete despair if I weren’t reading your letters, Heather Cox Richardson. Thank you again for the calm and the history. . I got to listen to some of your chat yesterday afternoon and I was struck by your thought that maybe Trump really believed he would win, and by a lot and is now panicked because he has no plans, absolutely nothing worth turning over to our President-elect Joe Biden. Trump is acting like a cornered rat. And we, the people, and the country are the worse for it.

Expand full comment

Last week, I had the same thought as Heather about a possible reason tRump will not allow the Biden team access to people and information vital to a smooth turnover of leadership. He is afraid that it will come out that he has NO PLAN, and no coherent strategy for ANYTHING! He doesn’t want his cult followers, or anyone else, to know he has been “flipping a coin” when it comes to decision making.

Or to see documents that show his total corruption—and his family’s and coconspirators’. I know Biden wants to govern and not keep trump front and center, but I wouldn’t mind having the popcorn concession at our version of the Nuremberg trials.

I believe it is vital that we hold the administration to account. Would Trump have happened, if Nixon had been prosecuted? We keep saying no one is above the law. Unless we investigate and prosecute, that is not true.

Expand full comment

I totally agree - if there are no consequences and Trump and family receive blanket pardons then it just is like a big advertisement - Criminals apply here, you can get away with anything as long as you hire a corrupt AG.

Expand full comment

I'd line up for popcorn, Marcy. I read yesterday that Biden isn't likely to pursue investigations into Trump's shenanigans, to better 'bring the country together'. I believe if he doesn't, or doesn't allow the DOJ to do so, he will lose the Democrats who voted for him. That would feel, I believe, like a betrayal. It sure would to me.

I get that's he's a kumbaya kind of guy, but this is not the time to give a pass to a man who nearly destroyed our democracy, IMO. Not to mention his many enablers and co-conspirators.

Expand full comment

Yes, agree Sandra. And Dr. R has said Ford did a disservice to the country - democracy - by pardoning Nixon, setting the stage for others to come along and commit similar acts against the country with impunity.

Expand full comment

Just as Ford lost support after the pardon bestowed on Nixon. Most everyone believes/knows that it was political suicide for him. Hopefully Biden will learn from Ford’s mistake.

Expand full comment

I don't think going after tRump (except New York State must) will have any impact on future Nixons. People like that are empty souls who figure they can scheme and/or buy their way out of any dirty corner. Instead we need to make our government "tRump proof."

There's always hope among the youth and younger generations!

You forget that the young age and apparently go nuts in the process. Some of the same Boomers who were idealists and anti-war protestors in the 60’s and 70’s morphed into Trumpies in 2016 then re-upped in 2020. Watch video of the Washington DC MAGA march, there are plenty of people under 40 who support Trump. Americans in general seem ill-informed, but the youth and younger generations seem particularly devoid of common sense and basic knowledge of civic affairs; they are too pre-occupied with the Kardashians, cute pet videos, and other inane subjects.

Expand full comment

Not all youth are like that. We have to teach our youth. They have to learn to think critically, to be well-versed about politics in our country and abroad, to understand the value of education, knowledge, science , history, literature, the arts, and to be trained in deciphering information through scholarly research. Our entire education system has to be revamped. In certain parts of the country, what students are taught is laughable. I am surrounded by deeply concerned young citizens who are anxious for things to change. They can't believe what has been omitted from their education and they abhor what has happened over the past four years. The young people you see in the Maggot crowds are often from families who are immersed in Maggot mentality or evangelical Christianity. But even many of them change their ways of thinking and of processing information, and become avid progressives and/or democrats. This will take time, but it is a good place to begin.

EXCUSE ME! I am one of those anti-protestors you speak of and I never voted for Fake 45 or any Repub! In fact, I took both of my daughters to Washington, DC for The 2019 Women's March. They are millennial. I took them there because my husband and I were in DC in the 70's when Watergate was going on. At that time were in our 20's and yes, we had ideals. You are leaving out the young folks who have been traumatized by shootings and death. You think they are young Republicans? I think not because you are speaking about whites and not about POC.

Expand full comment

Reread my post. I said “some” which means “not all.”

Don’t lecture me about young people being traumatized by death and shootings. When I was 16, my father was killed by a Black man. That didn’t make me an expert on violence, alcohol abuse, or race relations. I had an Hispanic step-brother killed in a knife fight during a drug deal gone bad. That didn’t make me an expert on drug dealers or weaponry. I had a alcoholic step-father and an alcoholic step-mother who died of cirrhosis of the liver. That didn’t make me an expert on alcoholism. Being traumatized doesn’t make you informed or an authority on anything. What my youthful trauma did was inspire me to get myself into a position where I wouldn’t have to deal with that BS on a daily basis.

Basically, Trump and everyone in his administration, and all of them working for him regarding the election, are traitors who have declared war on the United States.

But we knew that on November 9, 2016.

Expand full comment

Professor Richardson: You write that "It was notable today that the media was dominated not by the actions of the incoming president-elect, as one would expect after a presidential election, but by the actions of the lame-duck president, Donald Trump." This fact reflects a problem going back 4 years: across the media spectrum, Trump stories get clicks. "Boring" policy stories are a much slower sell. As one example, we can recall the one time in the 2016 Republican primary season that Trump chose not to participate in a debate: he got more coverage for skipping the debate than the actual participants received! Trump the showman has been playing this dynamic ever since, and he and the media have a sick, and yes, mutually beneficial, relationship. We the people are the losers.

One could argue, for now, that Trump is still President, and his actions are so weird, that he deserves the amount of coverage he's getting. But in 2 months, he'll be out of the White House. Will the press still breathlessly report on his every tweet and provocation? And will we still read those stories -- for no real reason, other than force of habit? IMO, what we need is much, much better journalism, left and right. Which will only come from Americans being far more demanding media consumers.

Expand full comment

I agree. It is clear that there is a major entertainment element to this dysfunction. Politics has never been so entertaining. I wonder what is going to happen to media after all this. Trump is clickbait which is basically the crack of the media world. Biden is boring and somewhat normal. It will be a hard sell to go back to the way it was before Trump for media companies. Media on the right and left have profited mightily from Trump stories. How will they fill the void?

Expand full comment

By practicing real journalism and finding people to cover who are more newsworthy? I'm making a vow to myself to stop clicking on anything that has "Trump" in the headline, not that I click on many as it is. Maybe it's time for all of us who have the time to write to the Editorial Boards of WaPo, NYT, USA Today, et al, and say "enough is enough. We want more coverage of Biden/Harris and less of the other guy." Maybe it's time to start cancelling subscriptions and telling them why.

Expand full comment

You are in the minority. I like to think of myself as not being susceptible to “clickbait” and to a certain extent I am true to that vision of myself. I do not use Facebook and I get my news from typically responsible news organizations. However, I too have become a addicted to hating Trump and those who vote for him through outlets such as The NY Times. If I am being truly honest with myself my disgust and the energy I have put into that disgust has been a form of entertainment. This time has been like watching a four year long movie that has a character that I am loving to hate. After Bidens election; I have had less intensity around the news and I have been consuming less news in general. Some would call it coming up for air but, it is also less entertaining.

Expand full comment

I disagree, clickbait is the crack of an increasingly uninformed populace. Supply alone doesn’t create demand. There is plenty of reliable news and media, but the people demand sound bites, titillation, entertainment, bias confirmation and other assorted forms of nonsense.

Expand full comment

I don’t believe people are merely uninformed as much as they are misinformed for entertainment purposes and to get votes from those who would not normally be interested. Most people are not interested in politics and policy or even history for that matter. The people that reside here such as you and I do not represent the desires of a large portion of the electorate. The information that the “uninfiormed” prefer is entertainment. Donald Trump and the media at large has made politics entertaining like a reality TV show makes many typicallyboring things exciting.

After the past four years Trump’s Government of personal fulfillment and chaotic decisions that frittered away our International reputation and reliability needs a respite of good solid Public Interest Government for and by the people.
