They see a guy who looks successful and wealthy, who is white and racist and sexist, and it makes them feel good about their identity as a white man. It’s rather shallow and dim, from our perspective, identifying so closely with one’s white race and male gender, but there it is. Put between 40% and half of the US in that circle, the circle of people who are comfortable and happy in their cushy little Hallmark channel bubble, where the whites and the men figure prominently and call the shots, and diversity agents (people of color or women in their power) are targets of suspicion. We live in a remarkably polarized society. Two completely different worldviews.
