I would say, that if there is one single thing that our schools need to do, it is to teach our children how to think logically, rationally, competently.

I watched Firing Line with Margaret Hoover this weekend. Her guest was Richard Dreyfuss, who has founded an organization whose mission is to get civics classes back in schools starting in the fourth grade and continuing through high school. The elimination of those courses has cost society greatly. It will take generations to rebuild that crucial base of knowledge.

Though, we should always be reassessing public education for the better, IтАЩm frustrated to see so many blame our teachers and public education on the mess weтАЩre in today. ItтАЩs NOT their job to teach morality. Resilience to propaganda comes from a healthy ego, unafraid of facing hard truths. First 5 years of life, before a child even starts school, are the most critical. We need to support young parents, and provide quality childcare. Stressed, overworked parents cannot attune to their children as well and provide as rich and fertile soil as a healthy ego needs. Communities that gather around young families and nurture them will grow ego competent, curious, compassionate adults

When I was a student at Whittier College in the mid-1960's I was having a conversation with my Russian History professor, Harry Nerhood, who said to me, "Richard, we're not just trying to teach you history, we're also trying to teach you how to think." A fact, with no context, means very little.
