There some days of recent, when you don't know whether to laugh, cry, or just wear a bag over my head to hide how embarrassing it is to be an American. I believe the last time we had a justice as pathetic as Alito and Thomas was in 1804. In nearly 250 years we still can't seem to get it right!

Sorry, I refuse to take the blame for this mess. The longer this goes on, the angrier I get. It's really frustrating to be 76 and not capable of murder. I'm not sure who to kill. Or may be it's just the full moon.

Dear Susan,

The "we" I used was, what is often referred to as the "royal we". Back in the day, when I was a young teen my first protest was against what had congress done. It was a protest of one but I refuse to say the new pledge because congress inserted the word God. This was in violation of the intent of the first amendment of the U S Constitution. I have not said the pledge since. That was 70 years ago this last April. I am still waiting for a correction.

I started working in campaigns when I was seventeen. I was hoping that we could keep the dream of a liberal democratic republic alive. Now I am not sure it can be done and at 84 it is time for the younger folks to take over the fight.

This post proves the 1850s, in which members of Congress fought each other physically, isn't that far away. https://jimbuie.substack.com/p/why-1850-doesnt-feel-so-very-far

Louise Goodnight:

You didn't get the audio version by mistake. You actually had to choose it instead of the printed email version. I can't tell you how to switch back to the email version, But you can simply click once on the word "Transcript" right up above these posts on this very page and you will immediately see a transcripted print version that you can read. When Heather started these audio versions, she specifically said that she would not be monitoring posts here. So if you want to read all the usual posted responses to her news letter, the ones she actually monitors, you will have to click once on the box to the right side of this very page that has Heather's picture and "Letters from an American" in it. That will always take you to the page where you can select the date for the Letter and posts you want to read. I hope this helps.

What do “stack” and “sub stack” mean?

Substack is an online platform that allows anyone to become an author then produce a communication to which others can subscribe. Readers can go online at substack.com to read publications or subscribe (free and paid) to publications that are delivered as email. More recently many authors have begun to provide oral versions (podcasts) of what they are writing.
