Thank you for reminding us that together we can rise up peacefully and make great change. Listening to your voice describing the events of Bloody Sunday in Selma made me imagine myself right there in the mix. I’d like to put a dream in our collective American conscience of a Soringtime March on Washington. We the people can will it into existence. It is time to reclaim our government “of the people, by the people, and for the people.” We cannot let it perish from the Earth.
I was unfamiliar with the book of this title, Solomon. Your post made me curious. I just subscribed to the author’s newsletter. And it called back the very beautiful ‘“Hope” is the thing with feathers,’ Emily Dickinson’s poem, which I revisited today and will return there. Thank you.
Stirring to me, every part of the professor’s telling. And how I wonder of the ways we all bear the scars of Bloody Sunday, still. Dare I even suggest it, as a white cisgender woman. Though not by our sacrifice, as did the courageous exemplars of John Lewis and Amelia Boynton and others that followed in the wake of it. Though I wonder if we call upon our own compassion and activism, that we may somehow participate in the transformation of the injustices that pervade us, and that of one another, and maybe even of ourselves. Even when all hope seems lost.
I feel so God-blessed to have grown up and be in college in California when all this was evolving. We had Kennedy, Johnson as presidents. We had MLK and John Lewis and my teachers in high school told us the truth about our nation, showed movies about justice. I marched while in college. Got my parents to stop voting Republican! Now, the mountain seems so much higher and harder to climb for my children. They are Democrats voters, and they've heard the stories from my heart. I don't know what more to do now, but to keep trying.
I grew up in Tulsa, OK. The horrendous Race Massacre if 1921 was kept from us so I had no idea that 300 Black people were murdered and the entire thriving "Black Wall Street had happened. I did know about the almost 5,000 lynching of Black men from 1872 to 1968 but only recently learned of the 1898 massacre of almost 300 Blacks, some of whom were elected officials in Wilmington, NC. Sadly, Dr. Cox Richardson may have been correct in her book that postulates that the South actually won the War. It seems the same kind of people who wore the sheets of the Klan and those who took extreme measures to prevent Blacks from voting are much like the ones in Tulsa in 1921 and Wilmington in 1898. While the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 were instrumental in advancing Blacks in our society, SCOTUS denuttted the Voting Rights Act. Now White extremists, all MAGAts have and are passing laws and gerrymandering in efforts to block Blacks from voting. They are also the folks who were the most violent during the insurrection of 2020 and threaten the lives and families of judges, journalists, and anyone who opposes White Nationalism, Their threat has become greater as they learned how important the primaries are. It seems the sycophants that now serve as Republicans in Congress are so terrified of being primed they have abandoned both their Constitutional responsibilities and their honor. As the MAGAts are a violent group, the members are also afraid for their personal safety and that of their families.
Democrats, Independents, and those Republicans that want to take back their Party( from the extremist that are now in power), Need to form an alliance to help support Financially or Otherwise, those Republicans that would vote against this traitorous president's agenda, if they weren't standing alone or are fearful of being primaried. Action NEEDS to happen NOW. Midterms are too Late!
Your knowledge is so deep and your comments so on point. I hope that people all over the country are truly reading and listening to all that you have to say. you give me hope. Thank you.
Come on, Bloody Sunday almost 100 years after the war, & now 60 years later we're losing ground again to white supremacy? Going back & forth on civil rights has to be stopped. I'm listening to a work of fiction set just after the Revolutionary War & can 'kind of' understand why it took some time to change the economy & social structures around slavery when it had been so well established, but it isn't "complicated", it's insatiable greed of those wanting to be a ruling class. When are we going to get clear that this is not healthy for any of us?
This is brilliant. We...all of us... have got to assure free access to voting.
John Lewis was a major hero!

Well told story! It's easy to reduce intentional, persistent processes to soundbites. Thank you for the whole story on this anniversary.
The great importance of what you say is even greater then before! We must Respect every Voiice ! If we are going to remain a democrocy
Feathers of Hope.

I refer to Jerry Weiss' substack.
Ah, I see it now. Thanks for the clarification.

I was coming up in my radio career when Viola Liuzzo was murdered and wrote my first network broadcast about her death.
Is the broadcast still available, Dr. Oppenheim?
Pumpkinhead and his acolytes will use force as we have already seen. I anticipate episodes like Kent State.
I truly believe we all know where we STAND

I remember all of this when I was in high school. What do we do now for the upcoming elections?
