You would have fit right into my family. My great uncle was a union lawyer who ran the Colorado Democratic Party for most of the first half of the last century. He gave the speech at the '32 convention recommending an end to prohibition. There's more, but I'll leave it there.

I pointed out to my father what the union had brought to teachers including a short duty free lunch. I think it was a half hour and our lunches were about 45 minutes. My last principal made sure to assign duties for the 15 minutes. His favs could skip it and anyone who somehow defied him, would hear about it. So there I was walking the halls while the other person who was supposed to be doing it also was seated on his rear in the teachers' room. He was a god-awful boys counselor who thought he was special to troubled students who he offloaded to me in the library.
Your last principal sounds like a real POS. The unioin should have made the entire lunch duty free, or else required that prospective principals have to prove that they are decent human beings who care about making schools better places for everyone in them. Including the cleanup crews.
We sued him and he was. It was all about him.....drained us of energy which should have been going to the kids. The union was a part of the statewide union which got teachers a duty free lunch so that they didn't have to eat their sandwich while on playground or hall duty.

I feel so much better now having heard this!
It was hell. But he is finally retired from another school district.
