he got elected in the first place (2016) because people thought he was a competent businessman, thanks to The Apprentice - despite bankrupting casinos ("the house always wins...") and other enterprises, and despite his openly fraudulent charity and university and ... and ... and..... So playing someone competent on TV, or now social media, goes a long way.

I imagine you are aware that Trump's popular book "The Art of The Deal" was ghostwritten and the writer now very much repents his shameful role in promoting the BS.
I think our reliance on actor/celebrities is the problem, not the solution, but yes, an effective leader need be courageous, outspoken, focused, and relatable. I suspect that a number of our venerated leaders would not have checked the "made for TV" box adequately, but still were skillful communicators. Maybe, at long last, it is time for America to put away childish things and grasp self-governance as an adult responsibility. And by "adult" I mean emotionally adult. When they were both in the news, who was more adult? Trump or school-girl Greta Thunberg?

So maybe we need a good Democratic actor/ celebrity to rally around. Suggestions?
