Thanks so so much for recording your own voice! While Substack’s version is better than no recording, I so much prefer hearing your voice. Also I know it takes extra time and effort and I want you to know I so much appreciate it. Please keep recording!
Thank you for these, Professor Richardson. I am concerned that it is one extra thing on your daily "to do list", to cause fatigue but it is special to hear your words as well as read them. Perhaps you enjoy it? I love reading aloud. I am also impressed that you read so clearly and without mistakes, congratulations!
Today’s largest corporations and wealthiest business people generally seek money & wealth above all else. That would be fine if we had effective government oversight to insure they don’t accumulate that wealth at the expense of others. Because of government dysfunction they get all the profits and dump all burdens on the public, whether those are pollution, physical or emotional injury, the consequences of their disinformation or the impact of their algorithms on users of social media. The only check on their power are lawsuits, which are costly to the plaintiff and rarely change corporate behavior.
That's exactly what HCR is writing about. T. Roosevelt recognized that corporations had too much power, and that the legal system alone was not adequate to constrain the damaging growth of that power. So T. Roosevelt worked to strengthen government oversight. FDR took that to the next level, with government protecting unionization, laws against child labor, social security for the aged, infrastructure projects to create good jobs and also to unleash the national economy (which the corps never give him credit for), thus setting up the conditions for the "golden age" of American middle class after WWII (being the only nation left standing also helped.)
It's so ironic that the scared white men of today look back to the America FDR created as the model for "making America great again," isn't it?
Of course, the Oligarchy, JP Morgan especially, but Prescott Bush, I. Dupont and many other WWI enriched war barons along the way, have never stopped fighting democracy since.
Oddly, it seems, the capitalists prefer dictatorships to democracy.
Professor Richardson, I also enjoy listening to your voice reading your “Letters”. Your voice articulates the points you really want brought out. Thank you so much!
I really enjoy listening.
Nice that I get an email notification of the availability. Good move!

Who knew?
I second both the above. Thank you
