James, In my view, your comment neglects to address that Biden’s meandering debate performance not only failed to put to rest doubts that, for some time, have troubled supporters, but, to the contrary, also reinforced those doubts.

Thanks for that reply, but I assumed I'd addressed Biden's performance by giving him a C-. I didn't think I needed to go into any more detail because I'm hearing too much of that detail from others.
Regardless, a decision must be made with one criterion and two options. The one criterion is that Trump must be defeated, and the two options are for Biden to run or step down. From what I know, I'm confident but not certain Biden will win, and I'm confident but not certain Trump will win if Biden steps down. If I'm wrong, then someone knows something I don't know, and they're keeping it to themselves.
Here's the closest I got from a CNN pundit yesterday. He said a majority of Democrats want Biden to set down, and then he refused to say who would replace him. That was his whole argument. So, lets say Biden is forced to follow his advice, then Trump wins because the Democratic Party implodes, and then Trump says "every day is day one!" Then what would that pundit say? Oops?
Again, competence is a concern, but without knowing intent, it's irrelevant. Biden intends to serve the whole country, so his intent is good, and he's doing a great job in his first term. In my view, he's as competent as any president in the modern era. Whether he can hold it together for another term is a legit question, but don't compare him to the Almighty. Instead, compare him to the alternative, which if he wins is Harris (I'm okay with that), and if he steps down is Trump.
Trump's competence is a concern, and because I know his intent, the more incompetent he is the better off we all are if he ever gets back in the Whitehouse. And yet, that too is irrelevant because he's got evil geniuses who hope he'll win and be their useful idiot while they put their 2025 plan together.
James, I simply would note, given what Trump is serving up, I believe it is wholly appropriate to question why the election is so close and to take stock, while there’s still time, to make sure that we’re putting our best foot forward.
I agree entirely, and in addition to agreeing, I think voters who recognize the danger Trump posses should take stock of everything, not just one thing. Allow me to explain.
To me, intent is much easier to judge and much more important than competence, Biden and Harris are obviously well meaning, and Trump is obviously in it for himself and nobody else. To me, the choice could not be clearer, and the choice is independent of competence.
So, why are the polls so close? Should we be taking stock of Biden, or should we be taking stock of the implicit assumptions that lie hidden in the status quo?
If an individual is not rigorously skeptical of the individual's own implicit assumptions, then those assumptions will distort how that individual interprets their observations. Like the interview of the lady from a focus group who said she was hoping to listen to adults debate and she was watching children argue.
That is not fair. How would she feel if her maturity was questioned because she was attempting to have a serious and important conversation with someone who only wanted to engage in a pissing contest? Just one example.
And, aside from stepping down, what is Biden supposed to say to the double haters? All he can do is his best and hope people take some time to think about what's really going on.
When I try to put myself in Biden's shoes, all I can think is it's my job to defeat Trump, and Trump wins if I step down. I'm not certain I'm right, but when I put everything I know together, including your comments, it tells me Biden is doing the right thing.
I feel an obligation to clarify my statement about the lady in the focus group.
When I express a novel thought, it's like carrying out a potentially dangerous chemistry experiment, and sometimes there's an explosion (just ask my wife), which is why I do everything I can to keep the blast area as small as possible. Sometimes the result is a series of experiments that end in my ability to express my thought in words that are not subject to misinterpretation.
Free speech is essential to democracy, so the problem isn't the lady expressing her conclusion. The problem is CNN broadcasting her unchallenged conclusion to the world, which is like using a truckload of chemicals to carry out a novel experiment.

I agree with you James. He was set up, and knew it, which must have been a shocking blow, and yet managed to deliver his message.

The election is close based on polls. Remember the red tsunami?
Gina, When polls trend similarly over time, while I don’t view them as predictive, I do believe we benefit by viewing them as instructive.
