Or is he the first to feel public opinion shifting and, like any politician, he is ready to change his values to meet the new circumstances?

Let's remember that not all politicians change their values to fit changing circumstances. The US is fortunate to still have a good number of people of integrity serving in office.

Maybe I'm just cranky but it doesn't seem like a majority of politicians who put their personal integrity above their ambitions. Maybe it's worse on the GOP side right now as regards Trump's big lie but I don't recall seeing a mass uprising on the Democratic side regarding Congressional insider trading.

That's because there wasn't a mass uprising amongst the Democrats. People like to place the Democratic Party on an altar of high ethical goodness that doesn't exist. It's all about getting re-elected not about the greater good. I'm cranky too.

I don't know enough to say that a majority work with integrity, but I know of a few who do, including a number of our local and county electeds.
