One reason I finally registered as a Democrat in January 2017 (after decades of voting Democratic) is that, although the Democratic *Party* (i.e., the organizational structure) had problems, ALL the really outstanding officeholders at both the federal and state level were Democrats. That mattered a lot. After five and a half years of being involved with the local Dems (and being a delegate to the MA state Dem convention several times), I know a good deal more about the party's problems but I'm still impressed as hell with the caliber of Democratic officeholders, including my two U.S. senators, Elizabeth Warren and Ed Markey, and my state senator (Julian Cyr) and state rep (Dylan Fernandes). Fwiw, Joe Biden was my 5th or 6th choice in the primary field, but I think he was the right nominee for the time and I doubt any of the other contenders could have done as good a job in incredibly difficult circumstances.
Yes, I had Biden farther down, as well, but I knew he had a better chance to win (white man) and a more moderate appeal (which was also important for the win).
