Acting like spiteful (and often malicious) children has become Republican core MO, and weirdly there seems to be some sort of broad appeal to it so long as they keep getting away with it. In reality (with few recent exceptions) their behavior is shameful, even criminal, and for a number of decades, their record has been dismal. Still waiting for the Reagan era promise of the "high tide" that allegedly "lifts all boats"? You'll be waiting till the ice caps melt, and that won't be pretty.

I would almost say, the GQP can keep getting away with their "spite as policy" just so long as the base feels that they are "owning the libs"--I believe that weird sentiment is the basis of that "broad appeal".

Exactamente. And as long as “libs” keep up with one step forward and then two or numerous steps back, that broad appeal is easy to maintain.

Keep it simple and quit acting simple. Liberal means favorable to progress and opposed to bigotry.
