In about 5th grade in the 1950s, there was a girl in my class a bit older than the rest, possibly from missing a school year who had an atrophied arm. I suspect that was from polio. We baby boomers who experienced all the “childhood diseases” the hard way also saw the remnants of Smallpox & Polio still active in the world.

I remember Billy who sat next to me grade school in the 50's had to walk with a leg brace after having polio.
