Steve, I read your comment with interest. I have read a lot of Anne Applebaum's excellent writing on Poland and its trajectory from an optimistic fledgling democracy into a populist driven, increasingly conservative narrow minded nation. The influence of a conservative Catholic Church is one factor but also the proximity to power by Poles who felt they had a right and entitlement to shape the society in ill-liberal ways. The response to Eukrainian refugees has been admirable but behind that the Polish experiment with Democracy looks pretty shaky. And what a shame... people certainly remember the autocratic excesses of Russia in Polish life. Totalitarianism is totalitarianism.
