I heard Atwood interviewed in Saint Paul, MN, after "Oryx and Crake" came out (which I highly recommend along with the other dystopian novels Hugh names). She talked about the research she did for that and other books, especially involving looking at what happens to nations that, like the US with 9/11, experience a grave shock. She said nations tended to respond to that kind of shock by moving toward authoritarianism. She looked at the audience that night with the intensity of her light blue eyes and said, "Watch out." I am haunted by that moment. Here we are.
