I found this quote, and I feel like it fits.

"Derive happiness in oneself from a good day's work, from illuminating the fog that surrounds us." --- Henri Matisse

That is what you do for us, most every day Heather.

Thank you for all of your good day’s of work. Thank you for helping us cut through the fog.

Sleep well.

'sis-boom-bah'

'cheerleading chant, originally (1867) an echoic phrase imitating the sound of a skyrocket flight (sis), the burst of the fireworks (boom), and the reaction of the crowd ((b)ah).'

(onlineetymologydictionary)

Saw Buddy's photo and sis-boom-bah immediately came to mind. To continue that cheer it is for Heather and Buddy, too. Thanks to you both and to the Forum as we continue to give our all.

CHEER FULL, Sunday morning to you, Christine! rah, rah, sis-boom-bah!

I had no clue to the etymology of that phrase. Unlike others here, our marching band always used it to put down the rally squads. But then, we were band geeks. "Raw, raw, sis bloom blah".

Ally, I hope you didn't mind the way I played around with your band v rally squads. I liked giving a few points to the sis-boom- bah cheerleading squad (but prefer bands in real life).

Not at all!!! It was always a good-natured rivalry with us. I figured you were carrying the tradition on!

Hey, you're a subscriber to Letter from an American, by the esteemed historian, Heather Cox Richardson. Whenever your band rudely puts down rally squads, don't be nincompoops about the best cheers in American history, 'rah, rah, sis-boom-bah! Who won this one folks? Let's give a rousing cheer for the rally squad: 'rah, rah, sis-boom-bah!!!

Beautiful photograph! Sleep well all my friends here 🙏

A friend’s recent comment concerning historic horrible treatment of Native Peoples prompted me to write this poem.

The Plain of My Existence (Nod to Wakan Tanka)

Muffled voices of women and children

Still I hear on this quiet plain.

Winds blowing across the grassland

Fertile by the blood of innocents.

What have we done?

What have we become,

To not recognize God’s children

Through a more powerful lens

Than this simple, narrow optic

Covered by the dust of fear and ignorance?

Heather, you keep up a grueling pace and have such wonderful insights. As a former newspaper columnist, I know how emotionally taxing and how exhausting the research is for this work. Most people don’t. Pace yourself woman and take all the breaks you need. We all want you around for a long time.

We were in the 80* yesterday. Still have my A/C on. I think I would surly parish if I lived up there. But the peacefulness of this photo looks so inviting. Last week You gave us the “Mother Load “ of the State of our Union, connecting the dots, and motivating us by reminding us that it is worth it all to try and save it. You deserve so much more than sleep.I think a lot of us actually feel relieved when you shut the system down and Reboot ! I know I think” Hope She doesn’t get burnout.” The bottom line is we really need you and nowhere else on this planet is there another Professor HCR.Rest Well.As a side note . I have not laughed as hard or as long in the last 3 years until your letter mentioning the Atty’s. not being able to appear in person at the Supreme Court, arguing the Vax mandate Remotely. To you Professor HCR,Buddy and forum Commenters, Thank You.

Ms. Richardson, your richly deserved night off (your six days a week ordinary course pace being grueling) is likely rather a a relief to most of your faithful readers, or at least this reader. Thus, being confronted with the facts about the dismal terrain each morning, facts that, as you almost always lay them out, instruct, is disquieting at best, and sometimes punishing (emotionally). This is so even when, as you do more than occasionally, offer a guardingly optimistic note that it all may work out for the democracy, more or less, understanding that "good" only is the goal, perfection being way beyond our collective grasp. Thank you so much for your estimable Letters.

Stunning! In addition to Scott Snyder's perfect Matisse quote, the strength of the light and its path through the "burning sea" in Buddy's image reminds me of the coincidence of Jan 6 being both a day of dark insurrection and a day of light in the Christian celebration of the Epiphany.

On Florida's Gulf coast city of Tarpon Springs the Greek community of sponge divers keeps alive their European culture including the Epiphany tradition of throwing a cross into the sea to be retrieved by one of many young divers, whose reward for finding the cross in the deep is to be especially blessed for the coming year. Florida is not Maine but there is a common thread of those who live and make a living by the ever changing seas. The strength of Buddy's sun "burning" through the "burning sea"- light through the dark and fog- is a hope filled image for me. Thank you, Buddy! Thank you, Heather!
