The Conservatives just wanted power and they knew Johnson could keep it for them in the chaos generated by May and surrounding Brexit negotiations. Their party is ostensibly the most successful and assuredly the oldest in the western world. They are very succesful in attaining power and keeping it by adapting themselves to the current needs and demands of the electorate.....however that was defined....for the past several centuries.
