Thanks, Bill, I added some of the uber rich responsible. But I do strongly feel the brainwashing tactics and lack of curbing that kind of mind control is extremely problematic...We need to teach critical thinking skills in kindergarten in how to recognize and band together to deal with liars, manipulators, gaslighting and bullies early on.

Yes! We are currently struggling with an excellent school system funding problem. The cost of SPED and health insurance has skyrocketed. Nobody's fault, really. Sign of the times. Unless you want to discuss the crazy way we fund schools. To be discussed another day.
The discussions about what programs to cut make me nervous. Especially when I hear some parents say: "Just teach them math and science!".
What our teachers have done for our grand kids over the last few years is wonderful. Learning critical thinking and empathy are woven into the day. So grateful.
My grandson started preschool recently. They live in Colorado. His school is run by retired teachers. I love that. Yale is implementing a emotional intelligence program there starting with 3 year olds. It's a pilot program. I'm really excited for this to be a success. How can it not be?
Absolutely. Without a doubt. Build it from the ground up. Our babies are worth so much more. They are sponges for knowledge. I tell my kids it's their job to do a better job than I did. As I desperately tried to do a better job at parenting than my parents did.
transmission of information to minors is one of the few endeavors I would risk enshrinimg as the secular equivalent of SACRED, in any civilization worth maintaining.
No, it doesn't. What gulls me is a group of peoples that made millions by profiting off people's pain and hate, think they can rule the word. Fuck them. They have their money in shell companies so they don't have to pay taxes here. Integrity isn't a part of their agenda. Grifting is.
I feel like I am supporting the schools in my uppity neighborhood all be myself from the amount of RE tax I have to pay. I am all for paying my fair share. This last increase is killing me though.
IMHO, schools should be funded equally (same $/child) on a state level. Basing the quality of a school on real estate values perpetuates inequality and punishes seniors unfairly.
Perhaps some sort of blend of income and sales tax (not on essentials like food and kids clothing) would make sense.
People are flocking to our town because of the schools reputation. I am thrilled our grand kids are getting a great start! But just like you, our RE taxes are through the roof.
What really galls me is I have lived in this little coastal town south of Boston for 50 years. I have no children so I have never used the schools.
I truly don't mind paying my fair share. My RE taxes got bumped almost 4k a year and I pay the same rate as a family with 4 kids using the schools. Just does not seem right to me.
One of the ideas I am researching is that Massachusetts has a provision - if a town decides to do it - to defer a percentage of the property tax each year for seniors who may qualify. The money is collected when the home is sold. It's a way to keep seniors in their homes.
The problem we have here is that we have that antique form of government where everything is voted at a 3 night long "Town Meeting". So people who are passionate about something and can find a way to get there, sit there and then whine about their pet projects - they often prevail. I don't call it town meeting now. I call it voter suppression.
I think you must live in my town! Seniors here are allowed to defer RE taxes... at the rate of 28% tax!
We too have the antiquated 'town meeting'. It is exactly as you describe! Only the pet projects the board of selectmen and advisory board give a nod to pass!
Almost noone attends. They are in the process of getting another school building passed to the tune of another 1K year tax burden. I started a 'vote no' group and arranged our first Zoom call. NOT 1 person attended from the list of people that said they were interested to learn more.
Noone including me will take on the job of passing a new town charter, so the voter suppression continues.

Love this! I've always had this wonderment about why we don't invest much more on kids earliest development. It's the foundation of everything!
Absolutely. Without a doubt. Build it from the ground up. Our babies are worth so much more. They are sponges for knowledge. I tell my kids it's their job to do a better job than I did. As I desperately tried to do a better job at parenting than my parents did.

What a great idea! Some are born with emotional intelligence and some appear to be not so fortunate. I believe environment also plays a key role.
Compassion is sign of higher intelligence. I hope word gets out.
Lisa, It doesn't seem to apply in the tech world.

I am just about priced out of my town.

Oh well, and the rich get richer.
I hear you.
