I have one more thing to say is we are old people living in the country and our neighbors are immigrants. They are the ones that help us the most and are truly good to us. My heart is breaking knowing they will have to suffer for the cruel politics of this nation.

America is a country of immigrants. It's country founded by people who were kicked out of every decent country in the world. Trump himself comes from immigrant stock. The German progenitor changed his name from Drumpf to Trump during the Thirty Years War. Drumpf - doesn't quite have the same ring, does it? He 's also married to an immigrant. His vice president's wife (the one with rictus smile during today's inauguration) is also one.

Truly a "Sisyphean" moment. On the date commemorating MLK's vision, we inaugurate the one who would roll the boulder of social justice back to the bottom. The key is finding joy as we re-embrace the struggle. HCR is a voice of reason, and renewal to that struggle. Thank you!

I startled when I saw your word "Joy."

The Verse of the Day on Bible Gateway is James 1:2-3. (NIV)

Consider it pure JOY, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.

No matter what faith any of us have, or none, we can seek reconciliation and to keep bending the arc of the moral universe toward JUSTICE.

Hate cannot drive out hate, only LOVE can do that. - Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

I've signed off social media except for FB. Many folks that tell us to stop that too don't realize it is the only way we get "news" where I live in rural Wa State. The "news" is all Sinclair broadcasting now and useless. I need an outlet and have signed onto some substacks so I hope that is a place I can safely go to make comments and read.

I deleted Twitter and threads then cleaned up my Facebook account, delete any ads that pop up, refuse to buy anything. Turned off location

Turned off Google history and voice

I'm still on FB for family and friends out of state and country

Blue sky 💙 is a safe alternative ☺️

I was there but today it was not safe and I decided I don't need it so signed off. I never got much interaction. Threads was actually better for small accounts like me but today it too is scummy so time to go. I already had my FB very limited and it works great for me.

I choose to honor MLK, JR on 1/20/25 vs the bozo getting inaugurated. 77.3M people are rejoicing the bozo while 77.58M people are not. Hold on tight, America.

My previous employer let me go in 2016, during the primary season when presidential candidates were being selected. I'm not sure if he'd have sent me packing if I'd been more enthusiastic about Mr Trump's growing success; it probably wouldn't have mattered, but it's also possible it was a factor. I drove by there on my way in to work this morning, and the three American flags he has hanging out front were at half-staff. I was, and am, incredibly moved by that. I don't know if it's dark enough yet for us to see the stars, but knowing they're there is how I understand faith. Thank you for this.

Thank you! Your words are exactly what I need today (and beyond). You didn’t include yourself in this talk of hero’s and bravery. But we all know you are part of that history. Thank you for being courageous so that we can grow from your words and address the battle that is now in front of us. May God bless us all.

Heather, you are one of those heroes. Thank you for persevering, even when so many of your readers have decided to turn away from the future in anticipated disgust. You are definitely one of MY heroes.

I'm not contending that things aren't bleak at the moment. However, it surely remains open to question whether Trump will really be able to do all the things he has promised to do. After all, he didn't build the wall along the southern border, nor was he able to browbeat Mexico into paying for it. He didn't find an alternative to the Affordable Care Act either. The only serious piece of legislation he managed to pass was the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which he only managed through budget reconciliation. He lacks the discipline to form realistic goals or adopt strategies to achieve those goals. The comedian, Seth Myers described Trump as an "intellectual Roomba" in the sense that he will move in one direction until he bumps into something and then he will go off in a completely different direction. Usually, a change of course will be initiated by a discussion with one his advisers or just something he's seen on cable TV. Two recent examples are his volte face on H-1B visas, which he initially promised to ban and then changed his mind due presumably to advice from Musk, causing some anger in the MAGA ranks. Then there is his decision to 'save' TikTok when in his first term he signed an executive order effectively banning it. One also reads that his Department of Government Efficiency is being sued on day one for its failure to comply with government transparency and hiring rules. I fully expect his second term to be just as chaotic as his first one.

Dear Heather

You mentioned you are writing a book about Wounded Knee. I wonder if you have mentioned Valentine McGillicuddy. He was the Indian agent who tried to convince the authorities to not over-react to the Ghost Dance craze and was roundly ignored. After all the Seventh Calvary deserved their revenge didn’t they?

There is a little know fact about Valentine M that I would like to share with you.

If you are interested let me know!
