It is still astounding to have to face daily examples/proofs of the blithely selfish inhumanity of such a large portion of the population. You read about, say, what life was like in the Middle Ages in Europe, when the wealthy and powerful were simply served by nearly everyone else, and you so want to believe that our hearts and minds as a society have evolved to a point where we wouldn't let that happen again.

The manipulation involved in the attempts to reconstitute a system where all power is in the hands of a venal few shows such a cynical understanding of how to appeal to the lowest common denominator in today's society.

There is something amiss in human nature; a tragic flaw that might well end us as a species. Jekyll and Hyde, it seems it's always with us, ad it seems to me to be they source of the lion's share of preventable human tragedies. we need to get smarter about how we react to it, before we run out of time.
