Oh, Anne-Louise, the penal island "getaway...from us" is sounding better each time you include another description. Sweet Justice! (Tinged slightly with a wee bit of revenge).
Um..one last questionтАФis there a golf course? Or just a nice, giant, hot sand pit?
No golf course - Nauru consists of towering cliffs of phosphate (guano) rising from the ocean, and if they cleared enough of the Christmas Island jungle it would promptly be taken over by the swarms of giant red crabs which are the local fauna. I think everything's there for them, even without that sand pit.
What a dream of a penal colony/island! When the seas eventually rise, our convicts can, at least, cling to cliffs of guano (like trump towers) to surviveтАФ and did you say swarms of RED crabs? Too perfect.
Thank you for such an entertaining lift to my spirit! Have you been there?
No, I've been to all the Pacific islands that appeal to me, but as a welcome-the-refugees-don't-lock-them-up militant I've informed myself about these two. Yes, SWARMS of large RED crabs. And indeed, just like trump towers - "guano" translates into the four-letter word sh*t.
Many thanks for your work and sharing this knowledge, Anne-Louise. As in all of this seditious coup, the iota of mirthfulness we eek out, we are mindful of the loudness of the absence of light force. So glad your light-filled militancy has joined this community so we can work together and support one another to re-balance the scales of justice for All The People. Southern Vermont has just begun receiving our first Afghan refugees to re-settle here. The children seem excited and began to integrate into our schools this week.
We have agreed to take 1,000 total. We have so much to learn. I have been asked to eventually provide grief support for the children with a colleague. Friends who are closest in this initial transition, say it is really the women, behind their headscarves, who look shell-shocked. We will need translators.
People who worked for The School for International Training (SIT), which folded a few years ago, have begun teaching ESL to these families and children. Upon arrival, they are first brought to the beautiful, quiet campus of SIT to stay and begin to adjust to their new world until housing, necessities, jobs and school-enrollment is secured. This first wave is only two families and a few single adults thus far, and our good-hearted local people are finding how overwhelmingly complex this new, quickly growing adventure will be. A new history has just begun in southern Vermont...whilst we continue to fight for our democracy, justice and health. As Clarissa Pinkola Estes says, "We were built for these times." I am counting on that. And...it would be infinitely harder without Heather and this community to share our knowledge, skills, resources and Hope in such a respectful and supportive atmosphere created here. It seek this connection every morning...like breathing.
In Southern Vermont! I embrace you all! You'll find the children will learn English very quickly, which will help to weave the newcomers into this welcoming community. A very early shared activity is the preparation of food...it brings laughter, and pleasure, and mutual respect. Thank you for this story.
No twitter?
No internet!
Sounds like a PERFECT penal colony for our seditious ex-pats!! Perfect for America and the rest of the world. What a delicious dream to manifest.
And I forgot to mention that it's up near the equator - it's always hot, with monsoonal rains...
