Thank you so much for this, Dr. Richardson. I am also reminded of a theme song of the University of Maine which I attended: "Fill the steins to dear old Maine." (Here is the next line to the Stein Song: "Shout till the rafters ring.")

Folks, we must get Heather's message spread widely now!

Thank you Heather Cox Richardson! ❤️

Between you, Tim Snyder, Angus King, and Adam Kinzinger, and the rest of the Substack team, I’m beginning to think we might be able to turn this ship around!!

If only we had those senators now! We need a lot more brave souls willing to do their jobs in all parts of government and of course we all need to do OUR jobs to keep up and ramp up the pressure! Thank you so much Heather for inspiring us daily 💙

Thanks, Dr. Richardson, so very much! Governor Mills did an outstanding job, too, during the well known governor's meeting this past week. Great jobs!

I don't think that the active, mediatized appearance of the Proud Boys and the doubling down of Trump & Co. is a coincidence. The administration is looking for violence to justify a state of emergency.

Ms. Cox Richardson, I don't know if you are able to read all the messages, but I wonder if at some point (if and when it makes sense) you might help us to understand when, why and how the two party system developed as a way to represent the interests of all Americans. It seems to be not only a polarizing system but also a disingenuous one (at least in the last several decades) where the Congressional representatives of the president's party often bend the truth / lie and enable a president's illegal or immoral actions in order to cater to him (always a "him") rather than strictly advocating for the best interests of his/her local constituents. How could we have a Congress that acts in the best interest of it's citizens rather than those of the president? The laws are supposed to come from the Congress to be carried out by the president and not the other way around. Thanks. Betsy

I guess we need to go back to the 1600s to remind, or perhaps, teach or reteach “we the people” that we have to hold up our end of the social contract. We need to “rage against the dying of the light.” We might call on Lin-Manuel Miranda to compose a musical. Art can still cut through the bullshit.

Yo Mainers, much conscientious good there. I like to think that we Oregonians share a lot in common with you Mainers: the love of independence and freedom.

As the days come and go, I wonder how the professor manages to report the facts with such clarity of purpose—as a truth-teller, and a teacher to us all. I remain grateful, every day.

While I can easily slip into feeling immobilized by the tumult of dismantling Democracy, I’m RESISTing the inclination—the feeling, and the madness that unfolds, unending. Attempting to keep close the wisdom of a fellow reader. Finding myself reaching for it, deep inside, that I "never give in, never give up."

I called Senator Angus King’s office for yet another courageous testimony to the truth of our Republic. That is, as HCR reminded us recently, in the words of Abraham Lincoln: “If we can keep it.”

Also, Senator King is a member of the United States Senate Committee on Armed Services. I called upon him in his capacity as a Committee Member to reject: “the purge of military leaders,” and the intention of Hegseth “to fire the judge advocates general, or JAGs—the military lawyers who administer the military code of justice—for the Army, Navy, and Air Force,” details of which HCR (and other voices) documented this weekend.

My plea may have sounded unnecessary to the stalwart senator, I realize, so I also stated my support for any action he may take in this regard. And I’m on my way to calling other members of the U.S. Senate Committee on Armed Forces. And I’ll be sure to echo one of the questions King put to the governing body of which he is a member, and to us all: “What’s it gonna take for us to wake up …”

If useful:

DC number for the office of Senator Angus King: (202) 224-5344

Note: I am just seeing some reporting of Hegseth’s firing of JAGs, although I’m ill-equipped to interpret the various perspectives, and the ability to discern the facts.

Thanks for everything you are doing. I’m so glad I found you. I never thought we could possibly be where we are. Joy Reid’s cancelation reinforces how bad things are.
