The Internet is a tool and virtually any tool can become a weapon in the service of malice. Kitchen knives, passenger planes, no doubt even plowshares. Deeper than malicious use of the Internet I see our tolerance for telling and spreading lies, of any sort, when methodology exists to identify them, and the urge to dominate.

I'm sure that everybody's wrong about something, but lying occurs when you report what you know to be false, or have good reason to suspect that it is, and the evidence I see suggests that salient right-wing leaders and conspiracy theorist see lies as a tool, not a transgression, and We the People far too inured to them. Recall how even contemporary Republicans reacted to Nixon's "coverup" compared to what they say today,
Lincoln said "As I would not be a slave, so I would not be a master. This expresses my idea of democracy. Whatever differs from this, to the extent of the difference, is no democracy." We have since abolished slavery per se in this country, yet I think the principle remains and pertains to any form of bullying, and bullying of many sorts is commonplace, starting in schoolyards.
When I discovered the Internet, I was convinced it's decentralized structure made it inherently democratic, which I think it is, and this conversion is proof of it; but those who lust for power and domination always find strategies to dominate just about anything. We the public have to assert solidarity against genuine abuses. The court of public opinion with some thought behind it.

Thank you for your ponderous response. I really appreciate more than soundbite communiques!
