Mitch McConnell is only voting against some of the awful nominees because he knows one vote won't make any difference. He's just trying to polish the apple for the general public, because he has acted abominably here in Kentucky recently. After some retirees were encouraged to peacefully assemble at his Lexington office to ask why their retirement benefits were being attacked by the un-elected Musk, he called the police on them. They finally decided folks could come in pairs of two to plead. After the first two left, the door was locked and police accused them of unlawful assembly and forcibly removed them. Shame on you, Mitch!
He is a day late and a dollar short. He could have cared less about the police officers lives that were protecting him on J6. But I will not judge, for it looks like soon he will face the ultimate adjudicator of his life. Not sure if these actions will vindicate all his hatefulness and actions against people here on earth over his years ( 50) in political office.
Fine with me if you break the law and suffer the consequences. But don't go thinking you are some kind of hero for the "underground railroad". Genuine asylum seekers have their legit ways to access, but breaking the law as the first act of coming to America is not remotely impressive. And it is stupid.
I heard a NPR interview with a trump supporter/voter today. A woman in N Carolina. She was very enthusiastic about all that trump has done and is doing. She said people should have known what was coming because he told everyone what he was going to do and he's been and is very transparent about everything. She said she didn't think that he should have pardoned everyone from Jan 6th but in light of everything else he's doing it can be overlooked. She was quite bubbly about his ongoing actions to decrease the size of government. It was an eye opener to hear her be supportive of trump. So that's what his voters have to say. I know this rhetoric because I heard it often from my family. It's just so disappointing to realize millions of people in the US are followers of a conman/grifter and they don't know it. You can't get through to them. They are convinced. What a disappointment.
Millions, in fact a majority, of other people in the US voted for exactly what Trump is doing, and yet it's "an eye-opener " that when Trump is doing what the majority want (ejecting illegals who have not been properly vetted) you are disappointed?
That is why no one listens to you.
You call him a "conman/grifter". Perhaps you could define those terms and then provide evidence for them? I am willing to talk but you need to do more than parrot the same dreary content-less insults before you can expect to be taken seriously. Groundless smears are a dime a dozen in left-wing media. Serious opponents have to give serious evidence, or you are wasting your life and mine in meaninglessness. That is why you are not "getting through to them " - the fault is in you not making your case, not them refusing to listen.
Does it not bother you that he is clearly a racist - he took out a full page add calling for the execution of 5 black teenagers who were accused of raping and seriously assaulting a woman in Central park. They were later found guilty. Even after they were eventually exonerated (when evidence came to light that proved their innocence) he doubled down and insisted they did it. If you look at the record, there are other examples of his racism. Does it not bother you that he was caught on tape talking about his approach to sexually assaulting women. "I don't even wait. And when you're a star, they let you do it. You can do anything. ... Grab 'em by the pussy. You can do anything." Does it not bother you that he swindled a lot of people who attended his Trump University. These were folks who were looking to get some skills so they could just make a living. He was convicted and ordered to pay $25 million in restitution. Does it not bother you that his pardons of people from January 6 included those who assaulted police officers who were simply doing their job to protect the Capitol. Calling him a conman/grifter is letting him off easy. This is a man who does not even understand empathy. He wants to eliminate Social Security and Medicare, and at the same time give another tax break to billionaires. What do you think is going to happen to hard working people when he imposes all his tariffs? Prices will rise, squeezing people even more. And he does not care. Do you think these are just the groundless smears of the left-wing media? Wake up.
It's another sign of the upside-down world of Donald Trump that his DoJ lawyers should explicitly cite as a reason for the dismissal of charges against Adams his willingness to assist the administration with its deportation policies - a quid pro quo if I've ever seen one - and then deny that there was a quid pro quo. Just as Donald Trump later insisted that 'the lawyer' (Danielle Sassoon) had been sacked even though her resignation had already been accepted by the DoJ. Just for a moment, he was back chairing 'The Apprentice'.
What the Hell !! I heard bits and pices of this Story but not this ! This is seriously shocking that a Mayor of a city like New York would do something like that but today it’s not surpriseing it’s Trumps World and we live in it 😪
We can fight back, Heather. Trump anticipates kickbacks from Elon on Federal contracts. Run this up the flag pole, because it impacts every single Federal BID that Musk currently has in progress, and also every potential bid. At issue is insider information. Competing bidders have recourse outside of the bid-letting agency. When a bidder suspects there will be an unfair bias in the agency, they can bypass GAO and file in federal court. Federal court judges will decide on the insider information issue, not the Executive Branch employees. What I foresee is no more Federal contracts for Musk. I don’t even see how he can be awarded a sole source extension to an existing contract. Jeff Bezos has a strong protest play here. https://hotbuttons.substack.com/p/musk-stains-future-federal-contract
It only took Hitler 53 days to dismantle the government and ruled in chaos and fear. Silence was looked at as complicity and too many lives were lost. We all need to write everyone in Congress, Senate, Governors, Supreme Court Justices and advisors. All decisions from the Presidents office must come before them, for a review, vote and impact understanding. The 14th amendment affects all of us as it was our relatives who came before us that guaranteed citizenship. Carl, you are spot on that BUSINESS LEADERS need to put focus on this insider (Musk) can do intended harm and put our tax money to work on his pet projects. Any one in the offices that are told to resign should say NO ... let them follow a fair labor law and practice. I won't live quietly and watch Trump and his circle take down our country.
Hitler was in a country with 45% unemployment and the President Paul Von Hindenburg appointed Hitler chancellor and authorized the Enabling Decree giving the state marshal law under Hilter. There was no dismantling, per se. We need to meet in the street to protest. We need to not be complicit. You are right there, Susanne.
No, you need to be intelligent enough to see that what Trump and Musk are doing will BENEFIT YOU by reducing your tax burden and tossing out nameless bureaucrats who get away with theft and corruption because the machinery is so huge nobody bothers with the petty theft and graft going on all over the place.
What will YOU do, Susan? Letters are certainly good for entertainment value, but Article 2 of the Constitution allows the President to preside over the actual execution of the laws that govern the workings of the various subdivisions of the active government .
He cannot supervise it all himself because of the ridiculously huge size of the government and the numbers of subsections responsible for everything, not to mention the galactic amounts of money he is responsible for spending efficiently and effectively.
" But they are UNELECTED!!! " I don't elect the IRS agent that looks at my tax return, or the Medicare officer that pays my medical bills. Trump is doing the right thing in recruiting good people (smart people who have shown real talent in achieving something) , and yes, rich people who aren't in it for the money since they have plenty, and could be living the good life instead of cleaning out the Augean Stables of the bloated bureaucracy.
''...He’s compared the work of the CDC to ‘Nazi death camps.’... If a couple of years ago I told you all that, and I told you that the Senate was about to put America’s health in this man’s hands, you’d probably tell me the Senate has lost its mind.”
The irony: The Senate has entrusted America’s health to a man who likened health agencies to genocidal operations. The absurdity lies in the contrast: someone who claimed that institutions responsible for disease prevention were comparable to Nazi atrocities is now responsible for public health decisions himself. This reversal of roles underscores the irrationality and hypocrisy of the situation. It’s like giving a firefighter job to someone who called fire departments “arsonists.”
Yikes found myself 5 days behind, and now caught up. Major snow storm hit our home in Modoc County California. Mitch oh Mitch we are proud of you doing the correct thing but you should have shone a back bone in January 2021 your NO vote means nothing to RFKjr. or Musk even Trump, they know you still are their guy! Things come so fast, hard for my 73 year old worm free brain to keep up. But then keeping up with snow removal since Ground Hog Day has been a major thing in the here and now. Valentines greetings to Heather and your wonder gang of subscribers. David Porter Misso
In courts throughout the world there are statues of “Lady Justice” holding a scale in one hand and sword in the other . This statue is frequently found in our courts including our Supreme Court. To me it appears that the actions being taken by leaders in our “Trump ordained” justice department would prefer to see Lady Justice FALL on her sword rather than stand holding her sword solely to benefit the likes of Trump and those who slavishly support him no matter what the cost to our society. Maybe it is time to remove this particular statue from all of our courts as the symbolism behind this particular statue is being summarily trashed.
If I would have know paying for Letters from an American would switch me to audio recordings with no access to a transcript and requiring me, a severely hearing impaired person, to load an app to be able to read what I once read for free, I NEVER WOULD HAVE PAID FOR THE SUBSCRIPTION.
I have hearing impairment. I subscribed and still get both the original text email and the oral recording. AND there is a transcript button right beneath the oral recording visual where I (and you) can get the written transcript. The problem is yours, not Heather's or her team. Instead of blaming everyone else, first try to identify what you are doing wrong. Also, the subscription is not purchasing the audio recordings, it is supporting HCR in her work.
Thanks Tracy Pierce. I found the box. It is not in the e-mail I receive, which used to be just Heather's writing sent directly to my inbox. Opening the audio page, which is useless to me, and clicking that box nets a time stamped, AI generated transcript of her speaking. Not as satisfying as reading someone's writing, but at least I have access to her wise and well informed work.
I have taken particular note to identify lawyers who speak in this and other forums re the issues regarding what legal steps can be taken to address the illegal excesses that the unappointed, unelected coupists are rampantly executing. When I see them contribute, their offerings can be labelled "spinning, side-stepping, quibbling mini-sermons."You would think they are the appropriate authorities to supply meaningful legal resolution. Not so. Never known for being moral giants in a profession of abysmal moral sloth, seemingly all seem to have their fingers in the air like the opportunistic hustlers people make sarcastic reference to. The few who do speak up only do so by offering their feelings, not legal resolution. Their agendas in the end speak to cowardly complicity. Hope is not a tactic.
Oh grow up. Trump is doing exactly what he was elected to do. IF YOU DISRUPT HIM you will bear the legal consequences of interfering with the CONSTITUTIONAL PROCESS. You idiotic lefties just will never learn --- in the words of Obama back in 2010 - WE WON.
Stop projecting "baby girl." Only you voted for the destruction of the constitutional process. Orange cult followers like you wear diapers...piss into the local piss bucket...wear maxi-pads on their heads......Like I.m tiny bit scared of your ICE-Gestapo units coming for me!! L-O-FUCKIN-L...bitch!
Keep holding your Trump bible upside down and listening to that fake

McConnell is voting against Kennedy also because he had polio as a child.

I have not read this anywhere, why hasn't he been exposed for the disgusting human he is. I'm surprised one of the newspapers hasn't written about it.
We always knew he was an asshole. More fuel for that fire.
W0W!!!!
Ruth I think you said it perfectly!!!
McConnell is THE critical figure in Trumps return. A total failure of honor and courage.
You are a hero, Heather. We need to start a new Underground Railroad for asylum seekers. Governor Phil Murphy is sheltering a migrant and I have started too: https://democracydefender2025.substack.com/p/governor-phil-murphy-is-leading-by

Always factual & informative. I really appreciate your voice.
BTW, can individual members of Congress file letters of criminal referral to the DOJ? Or elsewhere?
I realize they won't go far but they may help alert the public to the illegality of what Trump & Musk are doing.
All these resignations have the feeling of the 1973 Saturday Night Massacre... but will anyone care?

Sorry to have offended you but I AM devoted to "genuine" justice which is NOT imbued in a statue.

How much money would Trump require from Putin to give Ukraine to Russia?
He is demanding that Ukraine give up 50% of all their future mineral rights.
