So the lesson here is, Washington had served his country in many ways. He knew that it was his time to step away. Having listened to the podcast, I thought of President Biden, different circumstances but the measure of a man who loves his country more than himself .

Perhaps this moment and its significance should be as prominent in high school US History and Civics classes as Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation and Gettysburg Address. Or perhaps there needs be more courses devoted to the history of representative government starting with Athens and Rome. From the news reporting and citizens' comments around election time, most of us are wandering in the dark caverns of ignorance. Too many have taken the blessings we have for granted, both common citizens and elevated personalities. My father, uncles and friends' fathers fought in WWII. Hitler and Nazisim, Mussolini and Fascism were real, terrible, and not confined to the pages of books. SD Auburn CA

Certainly casts the incoming chief executive in sharply negative relief- one devoid of honour, decency, knowledge, ethics, and wisdom!

True. And I know the guy who will do the opposite from early next year unto 2029 if he'll survive the term healthy and unshot.

There might be someone who'll continue the tradition trying to make sure he'll be a zeroday-Dictator...

It's pleasant to imagine sometimes what might have happened if Donald Trump or Ronnie Reagan had been killed by an assassin's bullet. But we must remember that assassination has been far more damaging to the Left, whether it be Malcolm X, Martin King, JFK, or RFK as the target of an assassin. Assassination is the favored tool of right-wing movements, and even when it succeeds against a right-wing figure, it does little good. I'm not saying that killing can accomplish nothing, but it is out of alignment with left-wing or progressive values and goals. Therefore it does little good to our side. Better to let Trump shoot himself in the foot - as he surely will do - than to dream of taking him out and replacing him with . . . what? J.D. Vance?

Doesn't the evidence show that neither of the alleged assassins had given any thought to the political repercussions of their actions? What it shows that both attempts were scandalously mischaracterised as attacks on Trump by his political opponents.

I agree and neither do I hope it will happen but the fact that three attempts have already been made even before the election is the reason for my prediction. TFGs agressive style backfires and the security apparatus can only be so effective.

Thank you, Ms. Richardson, for your faithful and compelling writing and recording of how our history and national story is contained in and current events and America’s destiny.

With warm regards.

In Luigi Barzini's "The Italians," there is a chapter (7) devoted to Cola di Rienzo, the opening paragraphs with a palpably familiar description of the rise to power of a leader in Italy. If you don't have a handy copy of Luigi Barzini's "The Italians," here is the wikipedia page for the man himself. I still highly recommend Barzini's thoroughly descriptive account, though.
