Get ready for the lesson - it's going to be a big one - one u can't run from or point the finger of blame at another else for?..lolol..the whole world watched u do this to urselves in disbelief - 🙈!
This is the perfect time to remind people what this country has been aspiring towards for almost 250 years: equality, equality firstly to have a say in how we are governed. When we come so close to losing what we have taken for granted, we need this history. Thank you for choosing the words of Thomas Paine. We have been so fortunate to have greatness when we needed it!
I had not listened. Thinking I knew, I only read. Now, having listened, I hear your voice is as clear and penetrating as your writing. It's clear to me why folk ask you to run. I also understand why you don't want to. I think you are doing a fine job right where you are.
Thank you for highlighting the influence of Thomas Paine on our founding. I created a musical, The Crossing, with Jason Huza, and in collaboration with scholars, which dramatizes the role played by Thomas Paine and his American Crisis in George Washington's single most daring and successful act; the Crossing of the Delaware on XMas night 1776. My hope is that the musical will educate and inspire Americans to do the difficult work of continuing, not surrendering, the Democratic experiment.
The problem is that those in power wrote those words of independence for them, not others. Thus, their printed words were hypnotical, and without safe guards or rules of conduct for them. This is "self evident" today as we the people have enabled a select group to become "self determining" at our demise. Thus, our struggles are internal and self inflicted because it is what we have taught ourselves to believe is what MAGA is. "What we obtain too cheap, we esteem too lightly." It is so easy not to vote, so easy to capitulate, so easy to threaten others with lawsuits, so easy to pretend there is nothing to see here.
Paine was sincere in his wish for democratic rule for all, inclusive of women and all races. The opposing forces were and continue to be the factor preventing the full realization of this ideal. If we will heed his words (and actions!) then will do our part.
Powerful. I found much striking, & this gave me pause:
"In early 1776, Paine had told the fledgling Americans, many of whom still prayed for a return to the comfortable neglect they had enjoyed from the British government before 1763, that the colonies must form their own independent government."
As the U.S. sank again into hierarchies, tolerable neglect progressed to blatant, unsustainable abuse. There's no easy way to walk that back. Let's hope 'one way or another' enough people hear what is being put down, that we might hold to our "virtue" & do the work necessary for glorious triumph. Imagining what it was like to face death, discouraged & cold...that's the kind of fortitude we are descendants of. That's true American spirit.
Thank you Heather! America's revolutionary struggles are so very relevant now. You pull out the perfect snippets to inform and inspire!
Perhaps the men coming to power should reflect on the French Revolution.
This crew of men are not capable of reflection
Why should they be? Where there is no penalty, there is not crime.

Heather,
You are wonderful. We need you.
best,
Pat
King Elon and Prez Donnie should be reminded of the story of King Charles I. Absolute power did not end well.
You really need to do online history courses! Saw your interview with Tim, and I think that'd be such a great idea!
The tyranny of our plutocracy is indeed a revolutionary struggle.
Billionaire Monarchy.

I live and work in Ukraine with families displaced by the war. Can't help but see the parallels:
"By mid-December, things looked bleak for the Continental Army and the revolutionary government it backed."
"By mid-December (2024), things looked bleak for the Army of Ukraine and the country it defended."
then, of course, Paine speaks also to Ukraine:
Paine had no doubt that patriots would create (or PRESERVE A NATION) a new nation, eventually, because the cause of human self-determination was just.
It should have been a clue when Vance used the words "Ruling Class."

I paraphrase here but H L Menken once said: "One of these days the people of the US are going to get the president they want". Well we got him!

Question about the CF bill passed. Was the OITA left out and, if so, what does this benefit.
