Ding ding ding. You said the magic word: indifference.

My axis of evil — remember that bushism — is:

Greed. Speed. Indifference to Need.

It makes for an interesting Venn Diagram defining the crossover characteristics.

Speed refers to moving too fast to think, especially in regards to one’s actions on others. It’s a state of mind preferred by those who consider themselves too special to be bothered by life’s mundane rules. You increase the probability of harming another greatly by combining this with indifference to others needs.

Mundane example is a person running the light as it flips to red. My need is so important I risk harm to another by pushing through. When I combine that with total disregard for the needs of others at that moment, or with the greed of feeling entitled to choose my own way anyway anytime, then the probability of a destructive outcome increases.

Anyway, this is my little apparatus for self-checks. Take a breath, slow down, deal w my own sense of entitlement, recognize that others may be just as pressed for time or money. Breathe out a sense of knowing I’m part of the bigger picture.

It also helps me to diagnose the anti-maskers, trumpeteers, evangelicals, and even the mob-boss himself. He is not only indifferent to others needs, he greedily and speedily denies his own true needs.

Thank you for describing that technique.
