I was so happy to hear this broadcast. I think all those who worked with the UN to establish an articulated version of humanitarian norms, esp. Eleanor Roosevelt are our heros. These are the humanitarian norms I grew up with in Massachbusetts after WWII.

But Heather, so many of us have been disappointed with Democratic President Biden who totally ignored those norms in the Palestinian struggle against Israel. You need to confront this huge, disallusianing episode in US history for those of us who agree with you about the importance of all you have discussecd today, agree.

Twenty years ago I wrote a little poem applicable here, entitled: Mrs. Roosevelt

The message on the angel’s wing

said: “listen up- Do your thing.

The thing you think you cannot do

Must and can be done by you.”

Eleanor Roosevelt was her name.

Loving all her fight-made fame.

Thank you for this retrospective of human rights and role of the United Nations. Also participating in this wonderful effort the International Labor Organization played an active role--established after WWI in 1919 to set forward standards to protect workers and employers in the world of work. The ILO was active even during WWII but it was moved temporarily to Montreal, Canada near the McGill University to insure its continued work until after the War it went back to Geneva, Switzerland. It has continued to contribute to all these human rights standards in the World of Work.

The role of Eleanor Roosevelt cannot be underestimated in the restablished United Nations. One has to visit San Francisco to see the fruits of the discussions in the murals of Grace Cathedral and in monuments in Muir Woods.

Just finished listening to this broadcast. I learned a lot, how this document is certainly a gold standard, how there’s so much here to inspire us. How do we open others to open their minds to

these lessons ?

Jerusalem needs to be a city like the Vatican. When the nation of Israel was created I believe that this city was set up to let the four religions share the space. It needs to be discussed again. The land behind my church has the stumps of huge cedars that were planted by the local tribes. The circle the trees created was neutral ground that no tribe owned. This was where disagreements were settled without war. The legend says a warrior spirit protects the land. It has been planned for development since 1994 and the forest remains. I asked the nature conservancy organization to purchase it but they refused. With legal help it will be reconnected to the acre I manage with the Universel church. Israel do the right thing!

If you get the chance, read the book "The First Lady of World War II Eleanor Roosevelt's Daring Journey to the Frontlines and Back" by Shannon McKenna Schmidt. Eleanor Roosevelt understood it all back in 1943, racism, misogyny, the horrors of war, the terrible toll wars takes and more. She visited the Pacific alone during WWII, with no entourage, including war zones. She dressed in her Red Cross uniform, trying her best to ignore the big wigs so she could visit the military on the front lines and recovering in hospital. She took down all the names of the hospitalized military she visited and when she got home, contacted their families. The generals, admirals, were dead set against her going. Eleanor won them over. This trip must have greatly influenced her push for humanity, peace, and no more wars. Yet here we are again. We again lost our chance to listen to a woman that could have changed the world.

I listened hours ago, a few times. And since, the closing lines keep returning:

"Their stories underlined both that the fight for human rights is universal and that it requires courage. One recipient's award was delivered in absentia because he is imprisoned. Another award was posthumous-the recipient was murdered last year."

And returning.

It's disheartening to realize how many times the US has violated these tenets...
