It is interesting to learn about how much political campaigns and media coverage of them have changed over our history. People change, issues change, and technology changes. But the elections in which Trump has been/is a candidate have made me feel that we have entered the Twilight Zone. For example, that recent press conference at Mar-a-Lago. Trump seems to be more and more unhinged and the media covers this like it is the “new normal”, to use an over-used phrase. Yet, are we seriously considering electing someone who appears to be mentally ill to be our president? I am not a psychiatrist or psychologist, so obviously I’m stating my unprofessional opinion and you should take it with a grain of salt. But Trump’s connection to reality was tenuous at best before and now seems to have reached a new level of detachment.

I am hoping to get the printed version of Heather’s editorials not the audio version

You can receive an e-mail in your in-box with the written version of Letters From an American by clicking on the circle (like the one next to your name in this comment) with the small down arrow in the upper right hand corner of this screen. This will bring up a pull-down menu in which one of the choices is Manage Subscription. Click on that and it will bring up a page in which you can click “ON” and “OFF” buttons that allow selection of written and audio versions of this being sent to your e-mail. I’m using an iPad and the Safari browser, not the app, so things may look a little different on your device, but you should still be able to customize your subscription.

Lawrence: 'Stupidest' candidate Trump did not answer reporters' questions

It's 2016 all over again, the media has learned nothing, nothing.

Who were the reporters at that press conference? Maybe they were glad we couldn't hear their questions or see them being asked.

Is this what the 4th Estate has become? If so, we are in big trouble. Watch the video and decide for yourselves.

The msm has become what it wants to cover, low lying fantasy thats only designed to elicit outrage…NEWSFLASH THAT IS NOT NEWS OR JOURNALISM, whoever was at maralago is indeed ‘fake news’ which is concoted by republicans and reported on by idiots. ZERO coverage of Harris speech on the same day because ? We are witnessing the swift decline of msm by the internet which is basically only based on opinion with no attempt at fact checking or providing any basis for why a steaming pile gets attention but a REAL candidate does not. I’ve worked in the media my entire life and the shame is real, journalism is dead, coverage means nothing but to bump commercials with. When there is no more free press the only information you’ll be able to get is propaganda and sales pitch and the ‘journalist actors’ will be wholly responsible for its demise.

I am not a journalist and have not been involved the media, but agree with much of what you say. I think there are still some news sources that are more or less reliable, though flawed sometimes: New York Times, Washington Post, PBS, NPR and some small independent news organizations. I think I read that 25% of people get their news from social media? Don’t ask me to quote a source on that - I cannot remember. If true, I think that is dangerous. I really don’t want my information landscape shaped by Russian trolls or bots, among other bad actors. You probably know of Maria Ressa, Phillipine-American journalist, co-founder of Rappler (online news organization in the Phillipines), and 2021 Nobel Peace Prize winner. She gave the commencement address at Harvard in May of this year and highlighted the distortion of news information on the internet by platforms like Facebook, Instagram, and others. She coined a new word for this, calling it the “enshitification” of the internet. That word has stuck with me.

‘Enshitification’, if it fits then it’s so apparent it has a name. It’s not only the ‘internet’ but legacy media as well, it’s all being cannibalized by itself. Management, ownership primarily and the ‘bean counters have cooked up this scenario that’s headed straight for the cliff, full speed ahead. Where are the adults ? What’s the point exactly ? The need for profit, shareholders and less than honest ownership is the cause and will be the demise.

I agree on your comments about legacy media. I have to admit that I gave up on legacy media some years ago. In several years now, I haven’t watched ABC, NBC, CBS, CNN, MSNBC, etc. news, both local and national. And, of course, I stay away from the Propaganda Ministry of Fox, Newsmax, OAN, and on and on. Katie Couric has an op-ed in the NYT today entitled, “Network Newscasts Need to Better Reflect America”. She is mainly focused on the need for women anchors for the newscasts, but also mentions the general decline in viewership for legacy TV news. Yes, headed for the cliff.

Did You Tube carry the Harris speech after the maralago fantasy press conference ?

Expand full comment

Yes. It’s just a matter of searching on YouTube to see who is providing a feed. There’s always the usual players like WaPo but you never know who will provide it. Kinda fun actually….and refreshing.
