Another watershed marker in the history of our times. It’s said that all things are interconnected; seems there are more than a few reflected in today’s letter.

As for the professor’s July 30, 2024 letter, I was intrigued to learn about Tim Walz. Before then, I’d known little about the Minnesota governor, and of his policies that have brought greater care and well-being to his state. Over the week since, I’ve found myself returning to thoughts of things he has said and done.

And here we are, with the VP pick announcement this morning. And here I am yet again, marveling and grateful for the wisdom of these ‘Letters from an American.’

Thank you so much for all your insights, I've been following you for years and you've helped me stay sane and get a historical perspective. I wonder if you'd be generous to donate a signed copy of your new book Democracy Awakening to Park County Democrats (Colorado) silent auction fundraiser. I became chair when Trump got elected and we are really turning out voters in our rural county and hopefully getting our first Democratic commissioners elected for the first time in decades. If this is possible please email chair@parkdems.org, I'd be willing to purchase if it's not too much.

As a Democrat have you ever thought, for how ever terrible you think Trump is, the fact Dems are running dead even with him, must only mean Democrat candidates and policies are as equally appalling? Which might lead one to conclude, the long term solution to Democrats winning, is to just get better a governing.

Expand full comment

No, as a Democrat I’ve never thought that. The record shows that Democrats are great at governing and most Americans want the Democratic agenda, e.g., reproductive rights, voting rights, reasonable gun control, etc. I have concluded that many people simply believe things that are untrue, e.g., crime is up, not down, unemployment is up, not down under Biden/Harris, etc., because of media that lies to them, such as the Murdoch empire. Thanks for asking though.

Please Steven where are voting rights restricted? Where are registered voters unable to vote?

Your ‘broadbrush’ statement of reduced crime is simplistic. First of all the FBI database is not accurate as a number of law enforcement entities have been and still are delinquent with their crime data. Moreover there are municipalities where some crimes are down and other crimes are up. So if you live in an area of high crime (me Chicago), statements like “crime is lower” are hollow and naive.

Say hi to Dr. Benton C. Quest, Roger T. "Race" Bannon, Jonathan "Jonny" Quest, Hadji Singh and Bandit for me. It’s been ages since I saw them.

Dan may I suggest you start following Democracy Docket (Marc Elias has a daily newsletter of the multiple lawsuits throughout the U.S.--over 700 of them--that his law firm and others are fighting to preserve the right for Americans to vote. The RNC continues to file every day to block that Constitutional right. They have filed two separate cases in Nevada to block ballots from being counted that are received even one day after the election. They have now filed in Washington, D.C. for a national ban on ballots being counted if they arrive one day after the election. That is not up to the voter, that is a result of the USPS. Imagine ballots coming from those in the military overseas and their families. Sometimes there ballots arrive as late as two, three weeks after the election. Clearly Republicans are not supportive of the military. Multiple states have been cracked and packed into gerrymandered districts, including mine, breaking up Democratic votes into Republican districts which alters the Electoral College vote. On and on and on it goes.) Marc/Democracy Docket is also on YouTube. His is the most important information to receive in my opinion.

ELD- first I want to thank you for not calling me a ‘troll’ or accusing me of listening to Fox like Gladys!! Very refreshing! Thanks for sharing your source material for me to read. I will and then we can continue to intelligently discuss.

I do have a question now though to consider, if you were the Emperor of the US now, how many days post-election would you accept ballots for counting? Oops 2nd question, I assume you’d agree they need to be postmarked by the election date.

Expand full comment

If a ballot is postmarked before the election, it should absolutely count. How long does it take for a ballot to come from Germany, from Africa, Japan, wherever military are stationed? Are you telling me their vote shouldn't count? Voting is the only power we have in the government. Removing that power makes us no longer citizens.

Expand full comment

I didn’t say their vote shouldn’t count. I asked you, thinking you are a sensible person, how long would you agree to?

Gladys -with all due respect I don’t listen to Fox, but am an ‘avid’ consumer of all media. Also you may want to use a different ‘search engine’ than Google to get less biased results as I’m sure you’ve read about recent Google AI search results. Again I ask you to provide me the specific examples voting rights “in Florida and other red states”. I can intelligently argue specifics, but I can’t and will not even attempt to try arguing emotion.

In addition you don’t even know me but respond with a snide response with the reference to ‘Fox’. It never seems to fail that any left side argument that name-calling and snide references are used. Don’t you realize these obvious statements defeat the opinion you are trying to make.

It’s a huge messaging problem combined with the Murdoch empires lies.

What comes to mind is "Wrestlemania The Battle of the Billionaires" 13 years ago, where Trump, safely and unscathed, in a scripted choreographed wrestling exhibition, struts his stuff outside the ring as his surrogate beats the opposition's surrogate in the ring. Then Trump to the roaring crowd, gets his prize: he cruelly humiliates and punishes the loser, showing his power by shaving off his hair. The crowd loves it. Trump is in his element. Trump well understands this part of humanity.

This is that Trump 13 years ago : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5NsrwH9I9vE&list=PLsx9TD03aW-T1B-JCOdnU6D8jeobkgJBI

Trump is coming to an end of this run. I can feel it.

Heather- is everything in your world related to Trump? Maybe the fall of ‘reality TV’ content is that it just sucks?!?!

Your life philosophy is just the opposite of Occam's razor that is Trump’s razor- everything happens because of Trump.

Enough already!

And to think you were born in Chicago, but that was a good move to Maine! I spent some time both working and vacationing in Maine, beautiful!
