At the risk of offending some here, they are followers of Bernie and still see him as their idol. I made a post that was polite, but contrary and was rewarded with the label "toxic". They have a description on this particular page that is intolerant. They want people who check all the boxes rather than sometimes someone who can actually prevail in the general. They don't seem to understand that we have arrived where we are in hard steps, sometimes small steps. So, no voting for HRC and then bam....death star and the awful Supreme Court. We do have a person running on the D side who beat Schrader (asshat) in the primary. I hope she can win and maybe with the ire about abortion, that will be a little bit easier. It's an odd district that stretches all the way from the Portland area to Bend. Maybe the abortion decision woke them up that what we have can be taken away fairly easily. This week I saw one of these types wondering why there is a shortage of substitute teachers and threw a dart at the teacher's union implying that they have are too powerful politically. We even have problems hiring and keeping regular staff and that is not the fault of the union, but of the stressful times. This is also the person who was so awful at a D meeting that one of my friends, who has been a stalwart for land use here in Oregon for years, became physically ill. This is what really fries me, here in Marion County, we have several Ds, who have worked hard al their lives to make a better life for people and yet, they are regarded as "establishment" Ds. On the other hand, I do worry about the safety of some of the true believers as they always show up at various radical regressive events and film for example. I do think the abortion issue is unifying people.

Hi Michele,

I grew up in Berkeley, California during the 60s and saw how intolerant leftwing politics can be. The Republicans pointed this out and now here they are doing the same thing, which is curious and horrifying at the same time. There are plenty of D people who have been working their whole lives for change. Doing the really hard work required. To have them shouted down and condemned by either the right or the left gets to me. Doing the hard work of trying to make

what I would consider positive social change (ie., health, education, and welfare) without which we can't have a high-functioning democracy, is really difficult, and sometimes painfully slow work. I wish people shouting labels would just shut up and do the hard work necessary to move things forward for everyone. Teachers make a huge difference and while there are some bad teachers (as there are in any profession) they continue to be under-appreciated and underpaid. Good luck in Oregon! Cheers, Susan

I can imagine and I remember what happened in Berkeley in the 60s. I was happily out of country (Sierra Leone) for part of that decade, but also there when all the assassinations happened. We are going out to dinner tonight with the land use couple, so will catch up on all that's hopping on the political wire here in Oregon. At this point, I would be unwilling to call most of the election results. There are some good gun control measures on the ballot put there by the initiative process. So we'll see what our luck is.

Thank you. This place is in new hands after several iterations, and we haven't tried it yet.
