Your last words brought tears, not of sadness, but of joy because it has been a long, LONG time and I'm still alive to see this moment...it's quite emotional! I most sincerely hope that Ms. Harris becomes PRESIDENT Harris this year. I will have seen racial integration, women's financial independence, a black president, and hopefully a return to women's bodily control plus a black woman president...all in my lifetime!

Looking back in history from today, one wonders how it could possibly have taken so long for women to gain the right to vote. It seems so obvious that the right to vote should have been there from the very founding of the republic. The same could be said for black people being allowed to vote and for the abolition of slavery. These are national shames that have taken a long time to correct.

All of that said, I will be voting for VP Harris, not because she is a woman, or because she is black, or because she is south Asian, but because I believe she has the intellect, skills, judgement, morals, ethics and temperament to lead this country and make the lives of Americans better. I will vote for her on the merits, not on the basis of her chromosomes or DNA. However, if she wins, beating a man I consider to be the modern-day embodiment of Beelzebub himself, I admit it will be a kind of poetic justice seldom seen in this country.

It sure has !! Here's hoping for Kamala Harris to get there !!

Here in NZ ..Women got to vote in 1893 ..first in the world .. however it took us till 1919 to be allowed to stand for Parliament !

We have had some fantastic women leaders in New Zealand

Sadly lacking in our current Right leaning government .. but hope we can swing back . 🤞

Have fun at the Convention !!

How do I get to read this? I'd like to have a choice between reading or listening. This only seems to allow listening and that isn't always doable.

Go to the upper right corner of the screen and click on the circle (like the one next to your name in this comment) with the down arrow. This will bring up a pull down menu on which one of the choices is Manage Subscription. Click on that to bring up a page with buttons you can toggle ON or OFF for receiving the written and/or audio versions of Letters From an American in your e-mail inbox. I am using an iPad and the Safari browser, not the app, so things might appear a little different on your device, but it should be similar to what I have described.

Didn't seem to work before but I'll check it again to see if there's something I missed. Thank you!

Another well documented piece on women’s suffrage. I wonder, however, why Victoria Woodhull, first woman to run for president in 1872, was not mentioned.
