Hear, hear!

And these are my words of gratitude and joy for your nights of respite.

One Transcendent Moment

For one transcendent moment,

grey and pink clouds,

shaped like an awning

hover over a glistening, shale-rolled sea,

capturing glimmers of pink

from the magical carpet above.

For one transcendent moment,

the gold and copper tones of sun

peep over the horizon

with their eternal promise of

another day – a day to cherish,

to feel sea and sky herald bliss.

For one transcendent moment,

ashen wisps of clouds float above

the shimmering waters like a flock of

dusky birds headed for the glow --

as though beckoning a brand new

age of transformation and of becoming.

Relish each transcendent moment –

abide in it.

Winkin’, Blinkin’ and Nod, one night sailed off in a wooden shoe....

Have restful night all!

Expand full comment

Thought you’d like the full poem…

Wynken, Blynken, and Nod one night

Sailed off in a wooden shoe,—

Sailed on a river of crystal light

Into a sea of dew.

"Where are you going, and what do you wish?"

The old moon asked the three.

"We have come to fish for the herring-fish

That live in this beautiful sea;

Nets of silver and gold have we,"

Said Wynken,

Blynken,

And Nod.

The old moon laughed and sang a song,

As they rocked in the wooden shoe;

And the wind that sped them all night long

Ruffled the waves of dew;

The little stars were the herring-fish

That lived in the beautiful sea.

"Now cast your nets wherever you wish,—

Never afraid are we!"

So cried the stars to the fishermen three,

Wynken,

Blynken,

And Nod.

All night long their nets they threw

To the stars in the twinkling foam,—

Then down from the skies came the wooden shoe,

Bringing the fishermen home:

'Twas all so pretty a sail, it seemed

As if it could not be;

And some folk thought 'twas a dream they'd dreamed

Of sailing that beautiful sea;

But I shall name you the fishermen three:

Wynken,

Blynken,

And Nod.

Wynken and Blynken are two little eyes,

And Nod is a little head,

And the wooden shoe that sailed the skies

Is a wee one's trundle-bed;

So shut your eyes while Mother sings

Of wonderful sights that be,

And you shall see the beautiful things

As you rock in the misty sea

Where the old shoe rocked the fishermen three:—

Wynken,

Blynken,

And Nod.

And set beautifully to music by the Doobie Brothers.

I much prefer the Carly and Lucy Simon version - look for it in YouTube. (Lucy Simon is Carly’s older sister and wrote the music)

Interesting, I've never heard that one. Thanks Sheila.

Now that I have, I like it too, still prefer the Doobies but this has more English/Irish overtones that are really sweet.

I believe that Lucy set the poem to music when she was 14! Beautiful 😊

Thanks Sheila B! I have never heard that before.

Thank you Dave and Sheila! I found this while looking for the Doobie Brothers version . I didn't realize that Carly Simon (You're So Vain) had an older sister Lucy and they performed together for a while. Lucy wrote this melody when she was only 14 and she and Carly performed it on the Phil Donahue show in 1991! I think finding anecdotes about favorite performers is one of my greatest pleasures! https://youtu.be/lsAR0Kc2zZs

Thank you for that delicious treat. I didn’t know Carly Simon had an older sister, either, and I enjoyed seeing Phil Donahue again all these years later.

Someone else mentioned this children's story in the last few weeks, Kari, and it reminded me that my Aunt Mary Jane knew this by heart and told us that story when she came to visit in the summers. We begged her to tell the story over and over. We were spell bound. Such sweet childhood memories! Thank you! I bought 2 copies of the book and received them last week, beautifully illustrated. One for my anticipated great niece (Feb 2023) and one for me or some other newborn in the family!

Heather I recall, some months after you started your LFAA, that you said that you thought you might continue your brilliant nightly insights at least until Biden was inaugurated president.

We are blessed you have continued through the roller coaster of nearly another two years, including your interview with President Biden the day after Putin launched his ‘special military operation’ in Ukraine.

You have guided us through the bad, the ugly, and in recent weeks, the hope that is reflected in Buddy’s wonderfully serene photo.

May you guide us through more hopeful sailing in the coming weeks. Meanwhile, sleep, perchance to dream. You are in our thankful dreams.

Dear Buddy Poland, you showed me the vastness of space; the beauty of shapes, of colors and features of existence. You showed us how much we can see and feel in a photo that expands beyond the frame.

It has been difficult to stay calm while Trump is still around. Physical and psychic explosions never stop radiating from him. You are a master, Heather Cox Richardson, at holding the reins as America twists and turns from assaults, and insults, loyalty, memory, and the principles of democracy. With admiration, I take some measure of calm from you.

Good for you, Heather. You are a dynamo, but I've worried about the threat of your running out of steam. Despite the wealth of good news this past week, we're becoming more concerned about the threat of Trump crazies being inflamed by his never-ending rhetoric, as well as the failure of right-wing "news" and Republican politicians trying to place blame on Democrats and Merrick Garland for politicizing Trump's latest criminal behavior. Thanks for everything that you do, and thanks to Buddy for yet another gorgeous, uplifting example of his photographic talents. Take care of yourself. We continue to need you.
