And to Allen, our friend from Ukraine; may he know how much we are thinking of him, his family, and all those in his country who continue to remind us of the highest values and valor in this life.

I thought of the journey of Allen and Tanya tonight listening to the Vigil readings for Easter. The readings are done in the dark but light does come .May they be safe and well even as they grieve for all they have had to leave behind.

And, even worse, may no longer exist.

Hopefully, they're safe. He did post that they made it to Poland, and earlier commented that they'd eventually go to Barcelona - a lovely reward for all of their trauma.

They are in Canada at this time.

Thanks, Christine. I knew they were safe, but didn't have the Canada info until yesterday. Great news. It will take a while until they can decompress, I'm sure.

I missed the information about Allen and his family, and I’m so glad to hear other’s concern about Ukraine. We have an American friend who’s been in Ukraine for the last 20yrs, Doug. He married Masha and they have a son ready for college and two daughters. They lived in Lviv. Doug evacuated his family to Krakow, and went back to Lviv to coordinate other evacuations and bring in supplies. His most heartbreaking statement, “I’m amazed at the numbers of bodies I see in the streets, and how I’ve grown used to it.” 💔🙏🇺🇦

There has been no information about Allen and Tanya, at least that I've seen, in several weeks. I know we all hope they are safe. Doug's statement is indeed heartbreaking on any day, but especially so on Easter.

Allen has posted a few things on his FB page. They traveled across Canada visiting family and are now settled in an apartment in western Canada. Most of his FB posts are about what is happening in Ukraine, but he and Tanya are settled for now.

Thank you, Pam. I've been worried about Allen & Tanya and am pleased to know that they are safe in Canada.

I asked the other day if anyone had heard from him and received no response. Is there silence from Allen, or has anyone heard? I think he said he had family in Canada. But at the least, I can think of them and others in Ukraine and hope for the best. As Heather says, for now, let's take a deep breath. And be grateful for our own blessings!

Sally, Allen and I communicated a couple of days ago when he and his wife, Tanya' were settling in to their apartment in Alberta, Canada.. They are happy to be warm and have a bed to sleep on. There is no escape from their worry about Ukraine. Allen keeps up-to-date concerning the country, and I believe continues to be in touch with friends and, perhaps, family who are there. He checks in here and on LFAA's forum. I'll leave a message on this blog next time we communicate, so that you can post him. In any event, I will let him know that we all think about him and the family

Hi Sally. Allen is in touch with the person who is taking care of Lucky and the cats. Allen didn't mention whether he was going to try to get them to Canada. I will remember to ask next time. Allen is a terrific guy, a lot of strength, smarts and humor.

Aho! Blessings to all humanity. As Jelalludin Rumi wrote:

Today, like every other day, we wake up empty

and frightened. Don’t open the door to the study

and begin reading. Take down a musical instrument.

Let the beauty we love be what we do.

There are hundreds of ways to kneel and kiss the ground.

The breeze at dawn has secrets to tell you.

Don’t go back to sleep.

You must ask for what you really want.

Don’t go back to sleep.

People are going back and forth across the doorsill

where the two worlds touch.

The door is round and open.

Don’t go back to sleep.

Happy Easter from the West of Ireland.

Oh thank you. One of my very favorites! And a wise reminder of how to begin today's various celebrations of light and life and, tomorrow, and the day after, to do the same. We have nothing but this day and, if it should come, the next. Each one a miracle of the oldest of mythologies on this earth--the story of death and rebirth.

Happy Spring Everyone!

For followers of the Nazarene Carpenter, Happy Resurrection Sunday! "He is Risen!"

And, Blessings to all who worship in other religious faiths, or not, Peace between us--and all Creation!

What? I just saw a rabbit eating a chocolate human....

Expand full comment

When I think of the Nazarene Carpenter I am always back in one of my favorite passages in the gospels. Magdalene has come to the tomb with herbs to anoint Jesus' body, but the tomb is open and the body is gone. There is a man there and Mary mistakes him for thee gardener. She asks if he knows where they have taken the body. The exchange that follows is two words. Jesus looks at this faithful woman and says, only, "Mary." She recognizes him then and replies, "Rabbi." I have always felt that it's possible that is all we need in this life--a rabbi to call us by our name.

In whatever way I can understand (or be at peace with not understanding), Hallelujah! He is risen indeed. Thank you, Gus.

Expand full comment

I want to think the hope embodied in the resurrection today carries us forward and lifts us up as we face the many challenges ahead of us, both here and abroad.

Expand full comment

And I do think it will. That hope of resurrection is, quite literally, buried in this earth that brings flowers out of frozen ground, over and over, and--if we are mindful--light out of darkness every single day. There is no day that isn't a day of resurrection. Hallelujah.

A beautiful rendition I had not heard by him. Thanks Dean.

Expand full comment

Thank You Dean. I think that it really is as simple as that—the Rabbi who knows our name. Why is there so much contention, so much confusion and consternation over that? Why do we complicate and codify the simplest things? It is built in to human nature I guess.

I believe that, in Christ, Creator was telling us that humanity is ‘worth it.’ That Creator is not giving up on us. “ The kingdom of God is within you.” (Luke 17:21).

If we could just see each other as Worth It! I trust that someday we will. That capacity is also built into human nature....

Thanks, Marcia. I could post a link if I could figure out if this even has/is a link, so you will see I'm not a tech either. I wonder if I put it into a word document I could somehow attach that? I'm pretty sure that isn't the answer. Sigh

Expand full comment

Dean, if you ever figure out how to post memes or photos, let me know. You could try posting the meme on Heather's FB page.

Expand full comment

I'm operating on what I now think is a reasonable assumption--that Substack, or at least Heather, doesn't want these pages cluttered up with images. Can you imagine the visual chaos and the loss of focus in comments? The meme I got. this morning shows the Pillsbury Doughboy on the left with the caption above him "He is Risen." On his right, the Pillsbury Doughboy, textured like matzo and the caption above him "He is Not." I can't tell you why it struck me as so hilarious but it's one of those that just starts me laughing. As for Heather's FB page, I finally closed my FB account permanently and haven't been even tempted to return. There are a few things I sort of miss, but honestly I almost never even think about it.

Beyond glorious, is the photo in oranges of sky and on the water by Buddy Poland. Thank you, Buddy.

In America, on an almost daily basis a Letter is delivered to LFAA subscribers containing a distinct portrayal of the advances and retreats of autocracy; the criminality, treacherousness and treason of a cast of detestable horribles -- dangerous and darkly comical up against a kind and tougher than imagined, elderly president; the persistent January 6th Commission and the rest of us. Then there is the murderous Putin with his army of invaders. Most of all there are the courageous, war-torn, suffering, brutalized Ukrainian grandmas, grandpas, fighters, mothers and children beating off the Russian military. It is as though the bare hands of civilization gain strength to defeat the force of evil. Heather Cox Richardson steadfastly absorbs this darkness and light to translate it with a clear understanding of what we are all up against. With deep gratitude to Heather.

May this be a Holiday of blessings, rest, community and renewal.

Passover began April 15 and lasts eight nights. Many Ukrainian Jews will be celebrating Passover away from home, the story of Exodus so meaningful. From NPR: “At many Seders, these traditional symbols will be joined by new ones, to draw clear parallels between pharaoh's army and Russian forces: olive branches for peace, beets and sunflowers for Ukraine itself.”

https://www.npr.org/2022/04/15/1092877952/ukrainian-jews-displaced-by-war-find-passover-especially-poignant-this-year My friends and I sit down to the Passover table, as a World sociopolitical celebration. Fair trade, stories of slavery, freedom and exodus and connections of today , history and “the beginning.” Especially today, with so many countries uniting with Ukraine. And we hope the Jews in Russia and all countries that are not “free” will someday sit down to their table with freedom and not fear. For our Passover, Our book, the Haggadah, has been created by all of us as a recognition that freedom and equality are for ALL, here in America and the world over. Next year at home.
