My solution is to try to find news sources from opposing perspectives (liberal vs. conservative, USA vs. Russia), and then try to figure out what they're trying to cover up or avoid talking about.
That gets back to the question, Whose fake news do you believe? Is the Russian propaganda organization any better or worse than the American propaganda organization?

It sounds like you are assuming everyone is covering up something.
Not exactly, but in politics it seems that everybody has something to hide.
I'm assuming that most if not all news media outlets gave entrenched editorial biases that lead them to cover up and/or distort certain topics.
I would stay away from publications of the Russian propaganda organization, however.
