Phil: To your point about standardized testing….Learning has been quantified. I think it must now be rare for students to enjoy learning. School is a gauntlet. Grades are the scores in an almost athletic contest. I learned to love learning after school was almost done for me. When I had slipped the tyranny of worrying about (and being ashamed of) my GPA I could finally enjoy learning new things. What does that say? I worry K-12 education will never be reformed. Public education is too far gone. It is monetized now. Higher Ed is a big money enterprise too. Consumerism and corporate thinking has overtaken education. It is heartbreaking. It is impossible to discuss with anyone. Teachers are now in a way employed by parents—teachers are employees and parents their bosses. School is an internship. The undertaking of education spoiled by corporate thinking. What a shame. A tragedy. We have overlain the maximization of profit on everything. I don’t see a way out.
