I wonder if you might know people who could influence policy around nuclear waste (storage and further production) imposed on native lands in violation of treaty rights? The situation at Hanford in Washington State is critical in so many ways - including protecting waters of the Columbia River and associated waterways ... oh, not to mention health, safety and cultural rights of local indigenous people ... not to mention the impact on the whole body of life.
Once again, USDOE is imposing further violations - currently open to public comment until Friday, April 5. Could you please take a moment to review the letter that follows, and pass it on to anyone who might be able to make a difference?

Heart of America Northwest's Executive Director Gerry Pollet discussed how the Budget Request for Hanford Cleanup cuts cleanup alongside the Columbia River and has no funding to respond to leaking High Level Nuclear Waste tanks, while seeking to add billions for nuclear weapons production and more nuclear reactors.

Washington Ecology estimates that the request should be $1.5 billion more to meet all cleanup agreement and consent decree schedules and permit requirements.
Comments must be submitted Friday April 5.

USDOE should request funding to remove leakable liquids from the High Level Waste tanks that are currently leaking and to have the equipment, staffing and processes in place to promptly respond to new leaks. Requesting the funds is necessary to βdo no further harmβ and meet legal requirements.
USDOE is legally required to request from Congress the full amount of funding to meet compliance obligation requirements (e.g., cleanup agreement, consent decree and permit) for each year. Ecology estimates that this would be $4.56 billion in Fiscal Year 2025, not the $3 billion requested.
ο»ΏTo honor Treaty rights and federal environmental justice commitments, USDOE should be required to accelerate cleanup along the Columbia River. USDOE should be required to cleanup to levels that will protect Native Americans exercising Treaty rights along the River in the next decade rather than leaving contamination in place at levels that will greatly exceed standards for hundreds of years.
USDOE should be requesting more funding for River Corridor soil and groundwater cleanup instead of proposing to cut funding for cleanup along the Columbia River in 2025 and 2026.
Instead of seeking to increase spending by billions for nuclear weapons and reactors - creating more waste - USDOE's priority must be the cleanup of the contaminated legacy of nuclear weapons production at Hanford.
