Reagan definitely developed dementia toward the end, so that Nancy Reagan was the first de facto female President of the U.S., handling matters for Reagan.
I am pretty certain there were some earlier instances where the President's wife acted on his behalf during illness or decline into death. Sorry I can't come up with names right now. Tired. I um, agreed to be chair of our local Dem caucus. Yikes.
Good morning, Annie. I am told that Woodrow Wilson's wife acted in his behalf during his time of incompetency. That's great news, your being chair of the Dem Caucus. What state are you in? What is the size of your caucus?
Thank you, Richard. I'm in Vermont, and I live in a small town, c 4000 population. I referred to the group as a caucus, but this being New England, we organize things in terms of meetings organized by towns, then a county committee made up of delegates from the towns, then a state committee made up of delegates from the county meetings plus some at large members.
Our town committee has perhaps a dozen people at this point, with more we know weren't able to be there. That's up from 7 last session, in a meeting that met twice.: one to organize, the other to select someone to recommend a replacement for a vacated Justice of the Peace position. People organized events, but basically it was a dead committee. We've got a bunch of new folks, and I'm thrilled. Nervous, too. I hope I can serve them well.
Yes, in fact I did believe he was in cognitive decline.

Edith Wilson was first
Eleanor Roosevelt also had a significant roll.
Edith Wilson took over when Woodrow Wilson had a stroke and was incapacitated.
Thank you for this. I didn't know that. So, Nancy was the 2nd de facto U.S. president.
